OK, so I don't have any serious cans yet, although I'm about to invest. From reading the other threads on this forum I'm set on getting the Denon 5000. Why? - I listen to many different types of music, Sometimes it's noisy around me so I will benefit from a little isolation, they're within my budget and apparently are very comfortable (everyone seems to agree on that at least

So - stop me now if you think I'm way of on buying these...

Now to the subject of the thread - buy or try? I live in a city with only one Denon distributor and they won't get the D5000 until late August ;-( I imagine I'm not the only person out there who feels that 30 days is a horribly long time to wait - doing nothing - once the mind's set on getting something. Man - I want them in 30 hours! So, reading things like "I can't wait to get them and try them out" makes me wonder on the general attitude towards buying and trying? Would you go ahead and buy a headphones without trying them out first? Trusting others' opinions and the technical specs or is listening a must for you?

These HPs seem to be in high demand.

Just buy them and if you don't like them sell them on here for most of your money back. (once you get 50 post that is)

Audition as many brands you can now and get the feel for various brand's sound signature. That will help you narrow down scope as far as bassy, detailed, soundstage, etc. I know you've pre-picked the D5000s and they are fine HPs, but if you are spending that kind of dosh you might as well be sure there's not some surprise out there you didn't consider. Once you get your hands on the D5000s you'll be more comfortable saying, yeah, these are the HPs for me and I didn't make a mistake.

This doesn't really help, but get a few less expensive cans first to build a frame of reference. Listen to what others have to say, what music they listen to, what their sources/amps are like, etc. Once you've picked out some people who have similar tastes and opinions on the common cans, then it gets easier to determine what's worth auditioning for you and what should be panned. More expensive route but it helps.

Another thing you can do is check if there's any local Head-Fi ers in your area that have mini-meets. It is a good way to audition a lot of different types of headphones and sources. Not to mention meet a few new friends who have a similar affliction (I mean hobby, why do I always do that).

Did I mention Welcome? Welcome!

OK, thanx guys! And I suppose thank you also for the welcome - this place is heaven and hell combined! phew, the more you learn, the harder it gets and accidentaly also more expensive... (damn!

So, I ended up buying the Denon 5000s, I expect them some time next week!
(I will pair them up with a Corda Cantate btw)

Congrats on your purchase -- should be a great combo! FWIW, the Denons are such solid all-rounders (with some very special qualities) that you'd be unlikely to deeply regret buying them. With a few exceptions, they're one of those 'phones that don't seem to polarize opinion in a love/hate way. They're consistently enjoyable and sometimes spectacular and certainly comfy enough for all-day listening should the mood take you. An easy reommendation, I'd say.

best,

o

The Denons and Meier amps definitely have some synergy. I am very interested to hear your impressions of the D5000 with the new Cantate!
