So, I've been off Head-Fi for several months, being quite content with my setup (iPod l/o > SM3v3 > HD580's)... but not having a closed can that I'm satisfied with (HD25-1's and DT250-80's currently) had me coming back to see if there's anything new in the closed front... lo and behold.... the D5000's....

After reading countless threads on the new Denon's over a matter of a couple hours, the (few) comments comparing them to the AKG K701's and Senn 650's took control over my mouse finger and has caused me to pull the trigger on the D5000's.... 2 hours, five bills.

They should be in by mid-week.

Congratulations! You won't be disappointed. Came from 580 to D2000 myself.

You've made an excellent decision - the D5000s are a pleasure to use and look slick to boot.

Thanks y'all!

I'm *REALLY* looking forward to them.

I'm even considering ordering up the D2000's as well to compare them to see which one I'll actually be happiest with... still deciding on that one.

It's sorta exciting to see the recent activity by headphone manufacturers in the last few years. Lots of ultra-premium headphones coming out with more and more press coverage. Gets the big companies out there to put more R&D into great cans. The Head-Fi community ends up winning out in the end. (realistically, I bet Head-Fi has a lot to do with that growth...)

Maybe I'll finally find a closed can that won't make me grimace. In the meantime, it's good to be back.

jjhatfield, I ordered mine through Amazon Prime (gotta love the free 2-day shipping).

I really enjoy mine, and I'm pretty certain you'll enjoy yours

They are without a doubt the most comfortable headphones I've ever worn. Though I think eventually I will end up buying a pair of D2k's just to play around with.

hey spek, 580s? what happened to the 600s? i'll be real interested in hearing your thoughts about how the senns and denons stack up.

Zarathustra19, will do! I'll probably post a week or two after living with it for a while. It's the least I can do after gleaning so much from others.

jagathon, looks like I'll have to wait a bit for D2000 stock to rearrive at Audiocubes... "official" US distribution seems to be end-of-month...

daveDerek, I really tried to like the 600's (thanks again, btw!

). However, I felt the elevated highs (flatter by measure than the 580's, I suppose) didn't jive with the "further back in hall" presentation the 580/600/650's give (compared to Grado's as an example of the polar opposite presentation). Whether it's habit and familiarity or just subjective preference, I *really* enjoy the marriage between my trusty 580's and the Xin SM3v3 (OPA627).

11-ish years of living with the 580's have it so that I can conduct basic/non-critical audio post production work moderately accurately using them with just brief checks over monitors, as I know how edits on the 580's will translate to other systems. At home, the 580/SM3v3 combo is quite similar to my B&W 805's/Creek combo. They share similar tonality and presentation.

So, that's just a long way of saying, I just dig the 580's more in the end, even though I really wanted to dig the 600's more. The 600's have found a new home with one of my co-workers (who I'm trying to bend to the ways of Head-Fi

).

Same here. Congrats on your new purchase. Please post impressions when you get them. I'm also looking at the D2000 and D5000 for a future purchase. Have fun with your new toy.
