Hey All...

Just wondering if anyone here can get hold of the BP5 batteries, or if (as in my case) you've been able to kick-start your own BP5 battery to hold a charge?

I've had my D311 for must be 3 months now, and its only today that i've been able to trick the player into charging the battery for more than 15 seconds... and after a four hour charge, its playing the CDs nicely... job well done

...Hows your luck with these batteries?

I'll confess to what I did... you may put it down to pure coincidence, or you can try it yourself and see what happens...

Basically, after it only holding enough charge to say LO BATT, I decided (don't ask me why?) to lick the terminals to see if I could feel a charge... I could, and as soon as I did that, put it straight on charge (without drying the terminals), and it held... and charged for four hours...

Wacky... but true

Hey, have you considered bottling your saliva and selling here on head-fi?

Duncan's Magic Spit, guaranteed to bring batteries back from the dead. Use it on all your connections!

Come again?
So you gave your 311 a tongue job so that it would charge the battery? That's dedication...

Anyways, there's 4.5V (calibrated tongue) at the 35's terminals as soon as you power it up...

lol...

...I'm only saying what happened... nothing more

Oh well, you may all be skeptical, but I have a working BP5, so either way i'm happy

I just took out my BP5 today for the first time. I don't know if it will hold a charge because my D-311 just died :). Based on your risky experiment , I would try to short across the terminals briefly or maybe use a 100 ohm resistor or something.

FWIW, my tongue has a resistance of about 300-400k across the distance of the battery terminals, so I doubt that's it (lick the Fluke, baby, yeah. Somehow the thought creeps up that this may be the right time to stop browsing headfi and hit the pillow).
Maybe the wet terminals reduced the resistance to the contacts of the battery. Maybe it just encouraged Duncan to leave the battery in for four hours and it would've worked anyway (as far as I understand, in case of at least the D-35 the display shows the charging symbols dependent on the current draw, however the charging voltage is never turned off and will be present no matter what)?

PeterR...

When using the 311 I normally leave the mains adapter in, but you physically have to press the stop / charge button for the charging circuit to kick in... and as mentioned, previously this would work for maybe 15 seconds, and then just shut off...

...Its a mystery...

Looks like the 311's charging circuit is a little more sophisticated. I think the more common problem with the BP5s is however that you can charge them as long as you want, but their capacity is approaching zero. But it cant hurt anyway, just make sure nobody's watching
