I am about to buy a full size headphone, and these two seem to be about the same price. I am looking for a headphone that is good with both rock and techno. Which one between the denon and the shure, or is there another one? I kind of want to stay away from AT as I want to try a different brand.

Several people have mentioned that they preferred the SRH840s over the D2000, so I'd wait until you hear from people have owned or tried both and have more in depth views and comparisons than the above gentleman. Some opinions can be found in Quinto's impression thread of the 840s, the Canjam '09 thread and Jude's Shure Leaked Information thread.

The Shure SRH840 just came out so very few people have them so far. There is an impressions thread that you can check out, but I'm not sure anyone is familiar enough with both to compare them very well.

I can't imagine many folks have even burned their Shures in fully. One thing I will say, though, is that I think the Shures are one of the safest bets I've heard in terms of being very well balanced across the frequency spectrum and almost being guaranteed to sound relatively pleasing to most people who try them, without any major flaws or idiosyncrasies. They're a little closed in relative to open phones as well as phones with big soundstages like the D5000 or my CD3000, but make up for this with strong imaging and separation.

FWIR of the D5000, if I had to choose I would take the SRH840 for rock but the D5000 for techno, so it's a bit of a wash in the genres you mentioned (and both perform competently in the other genre as well). YMMV of course, as, probably, will the experience with the D2000.

Hmm, I think I will prob go for the D2000, as I like soundstage, and from what I have read so far, the sound stage on the D2000>SRH840

IMO the Shure is plays in another league then the Denon..

The bass and mids are much better then the D2000's.. treble is way better too

I would try to audition the Shure before buying the D2000 if I were you.. My guess is you regret the Denon when you compare it to the Shure..

I sold my Denon's a while ago, but the bass quality is much better indeed.

The quantity of the shure's bass is absolutely there, maybe slightly less then the Denon, I'm not sure, but most definitely sufficient for me, and for most of the people I'm shure...

You have to give him some time to develope though

Shures have plenty of bass. A little less than my Denons did, but much more than my K701 or CD3000 - should be satisfying for anyone except the most extreme basshead.

FWIR, the Shure has more impactful bass than the HD650, although both are pretty deep and of high quality. I enjoy the Shure bass more, though - it's punchier and doesn't feel as slow/syrupy and make the sound as dark as the Senns. This, of course, coming from someone who wasn't too fond of the Senns when he had them, so take that for what it's worth.

I went with the D2000 for really one reason, and that is soundstage. That is pretty important to me, and it is unfortunate that I can't use open phones, as these will be hooked up to my Pico DAC/Amp in my dorm room. Good thing I know my roommate is trustworthy.

Strange. Opposite of the widely recommended option in this thread. Anyhow, enjoy your new headphones and let us know what you think of them.
