The cable of the D5000's are thicker, they are not the same ones. The cables on the D2000 and D7000 look pretty similar though.

The D5000 cable with the big connectors was converted to balanced. Converting to balanced requires altering the cable and adding the XLR connectors. Balanced also requires a special amp.

Here's a bit of reading info on what it means to do balanced headphones: About Balanced Headphones

So yes, the D5000 cable pictured there has been altered. But it's still the same cable, just different connectors. The neat thing about the Denon cable is that it is easy to convert to balanced since it has 4 wires in the cable instead of 3.

The D2000 cable has had two versions of the plastic "Y" connector piece. The "Y" connector is where the cable splits to go to the left and right ears. My D2000 has a smaller "Y" connector plastic piece. The D2000 cable pictured has the larger version. The D5000 cable also uses the larger version. Going just by the size of the "Y" connector is not a reliable way to differentiate between the D2000 and D5000 cable.

Ok, then tell me, do I have a genuine D5000 or a D2000 with wooden cups?
The cable doesn't look as thick as the balanced D5000 in the picture earlier...

That's a good question. I don't know of a way or the best way to tell the difference between the two cables if you only have one of them and can't compare directly to the other.

I did a quick eyeball measurement of the diameter of my D2000 cable. I held it up to a ruler and just eyeballed the diameter. It's about 6.5mm in diameter, probably 7mm. The skinny cables that go to each ear cup are about 3mm in diameter. I don't have calipers handy for a more accurate measurement.

I don't have a D5000 cable to measure or compare to.

Is there a better way to tell other than measuring the diameter of the cable?

Yep, about 6.5mm and the skinny cable 3mm...
So what's the deal here?
Do I have 'fake' D5000s?
I have bought them as B-stock phones from HeadRoom btw

Oh well, never mind my question, I don't care really, I like my headphones whether they are D5000s or D2000s with wooden cups

D5000 cups won't fit on D2000s, so that isn't it. The D2000 cups are slightly smaller and have a different attachment system.

It's the rumor that won't die!

I can't say for sure that there has never been a D2000 that somehow got a D5000 or D7000 cable put on it at the factory by mistake or something. I can say, in all the hundreds we've handled, we haven't seen it.

Weird. Maybe Denon have changed the cables to this newer one which isn't as thick as the old D5000 cable. That cable was also give to the D2000.

This is the main reason why I referred to the old D2000 cable as "crap", as it's a huge annoyance.
