I've heard a lot of good things about the d1000s but the one thing that makes me hesitate is that I've heard they don't do very job of isolating. Are they really that bad at isolating and keeping sound out and how do they compare to the ATH-M30s in terms of isolation? thanks

Isolation with the d1000s is peculiar in the sense that it doesnt let sound out unless the volume is at an unbearable level for me. However, they do let sound in. I don't feel that they isolate me much at all, even compared to my es7 which isnt that great at isolating outside sounds either.

I know my es7 provide more isolation than the d1000. I havent used the the rp21's yet but I think skylab's review had them rated higher than the es7 isolation wise. If you look around you could maybe snatch a pair of hd25, but I think they run out of your budget of $100. They are closed portables that isolate very well. Or if you aren't needing the headphones to be portable then perhaps look into the dt770 which run about 50 over your budget.

I have two pairs of the D1000. My wife and me use them a lot when we are traveling specially in the plane and I have no issues regarding external noise desturbing the quality of the sound in the music we listen or movies we watch.
