I paid around 225$ for a D-777 on E-bay. Too much, I know. But it is NOS, and I HAD to have it. I've been using a really crappy old Sony for at least 5 years.

Is the line out on this unit in the back? So one can't go through the line out if the external batt. pack is being used (for lineoout-> Supermini-> Grado use on the go)? Also, can the Nh-14WM gumsticks be used with this player w/o problems?

BTW, I like my HD 570s! I think they sound better than my SR 80s.

Thanks.

It has a line out on the rear and I think the NH14WM batteries can be accepted

Wow, you won that one? I was looking at it the other day. I think you've reached your portable audio budget for the year! I can't answer any of your questions since I have never actually seen one of these units in person, but congratulations and enjoy.

And don't forget, this guy is very proud of you:

Hi,
I don't think that D-777 will let you down. Take a good care of it....and it will delight your ears. D-777's beautiful carbon fibre will please you eyes, but you need to be careful since it is prone to scratching. The headphone out sound wonderful, and the line out is very detail. It is a noticable improvement over the CT-570...and believe me if you choose to sell it in the next two year...you won't be loosing much.

Confirming what Jaskin said: It is true that the AA battery pack obstructs the line out

But it does run OK with the weaker gumsticks. That price doesn't seem so very bad for an absolutely NOS unit....

Thanks for the replies. The original gumsticks are useless due to the age of the unit (the seller said). I am planning on getting some replacement 1400 mAH batteries for the 777 if they are OK to use. From what I have read, I *think* they are OK. Not positive, though.

Thanks again.

The line out is indeed blocked by the external battery pack. I believe Sony didn't realize that portable users would want the line out, and assumed it was for connecting to a home setup where the wallwart would be used. OTOH, you can power the unit with an external battery pack from Rat Shack, and get the added playing time that way without blocking the line out.

There is no problem whatsoever with the NH-14WM gumsticks, and in fact you go longer between charges with them than with the original batteries.

I don't think you want to add the battery case to the body of D-777. The NH-WM14 works perfectly fine with the D-777. You should get around 10-12 hours out of the rechargeable battery anyway. Good luck on your new discman.

Hi,

Any idea where I can purchse the NH-15WM for a reasonable price? I found some on ebay for $25 a piece.

I was watching that auction in the last two minutes. It was amazing to see that sniper (also almost certainly a head-fier) bid $225 in, was it the last 3 seconds? But he bid $2.50 less than you and you still won. Congrats. If it weren't for that sniper in the end you would have gotten it for $164, a great price. But on Ebay you definitely can't count your eggs...

Please post a review after you get it. Considering how much we head-fiers are paying for these things we would all like to be sure that they are worth as much as a new NJB3 and certain Ipods. Pretty scary prices for an old (and used) discman. For the average person it must seem particularly crazy because d-ej1000 and ej2000 players are available new for like $130 or so. LOL.

I noticed that a couple of weeks ago someone got a genuinely mint D-311 for $300. That damn thing still had the stickers on it. What a find that was. I wish I had seen it. It must have been a head-fier who got it. No way any "normal" person would pay that much for a very old (although new) discman with no shock protection. It is interesting to me that people are willing to pay almost as much for a d-777 as they are for a D-311, considering that Duncan, at least, in his detailed comparison, rated the 311 as significantly better sound-wise.

I also don't think you will lose much money if you sell it. Ebay is not such a great place to be a buyer, but it's a great place to be a seller. I am sure that there will at least be some sellers who are completely amazed at how much more people are willing to pay for their players than brand new slick looking players with G-protection--and probably have no idea why

They are different cd players for different uses. I have the D311 yet I still got myself a D777 for portable usage. I have no idea what the D311's use is as yet other than having a great headphone out.

@jaskin:
Does the 311 really skip that easily? It's been a long time since I have used a non-ESP player, but I have fond memories of my old trusty D-10 discman (the one with the flat pack that snaps to the bottom of the player) going with me everywhere I went.

As I recall, I would carry the player around in my right hand, holding it vertically, palm inward, by the bottom. To some extent my hand would act as a shock absorber, but I recall walking all over the place that way. I practically never removed my MDR-V6s (give me a break I was young and didn't realize how muddy the sound was, dumped them in a couple of years for my first pair of Senns).

For running, I would have to resort to my WM-F107 solar walkman

. I always wanted to figure out a way to run with the D-10, but it really was impossible. IIRC, I snapped up one of the first ESP ones as soon as I saw it. However, I found DAT to be the best for jogging. ESP wasn't good enough. It would always skip eventually.

v6 muddy? i don't think so. my v6 sound great out of the d777 headphone out. a perfect match, very crisp and punchy.

In think the D777 sounds better w/ the battery pack on. I own one and got it used, and the gumsticks still work well. I imagine your NOS would work too. Be very careful, mine was working perfectly intil on day I couldn't get the top door open, and had to pry it (while busting the closing mechanism) open. It still sounds the same, but the top needs help opening and closing. I also think the headphone out is better than the line out.

I will certainly post some of my impressions when I get the unit and run it for a while. I have enough poor sounding pcdps to know what it *shouldn't* sound like. Things are getting dangerous for me. I am about to start really getting obsessed with headphone hi-fi audio. It seems to me that having a really good headphone system can sound as good and be less expensive than a really good component system. Also, a great source can be used with a good amp and good speakers...

So now, it looks like the next step is to get a really good home source... and then build my own headamp (tubes, anyone?)...

Gojira, I figured there would be sniper. I noticed that the auction was even announced on these boards somewhere. I definitely wanted the thing, though. And the more I thought about it, the more I was willing to increase my highest bid. It worked, but it did cost a lot. Factor in shipping from Japan and I'm in for some trouble.

Speaking of which, I go to Japan about once a year, does anyone know of the best placed to get old Japanese pcdps? There must be somewhere (akihabara?). I have this picture in my mind of an old shop in some alley with shelves and shelves of old sonys, denons, and panasonics. (a beautiful dream).

enjoy.
