Alright guys-- I need your opinion. I have the opportunity to get a D-777. I've read plenty of reviews on this unit and I know it's great, especially as far as headphone out is concerned, not to mention classic looks.

I'm wondering if I should trade my D-EJ955 for it. I mean, I'm sure the D-777 sounds better through headphone out, but shock protection and battery life is also important to me, and the 955 gets like 20 hours on just two NiCad gumsticks! Plus it has better shock protection. And I mainly use Koss Portapros, and I think they sound pretty darned good through the headphone out on the 955 (not as good as through my D-25S, but still pretty good).

So can you give me your insight into what I should do? Thanks in advance!

Hi,
It sounds like you are very satisfied with your 955. It would be good to trade your 955, if these factors are your concern:

Great Headphone out, since you are using 955. D-777 will totally blow you away. 955 is in the dust.

D-777 line out is good, though not as good as the 955. The difference is very minimal.

D-777 is one classy discman. If looks can kill this is it. It light, solid, and very slim.

D-777 is very solid performer. I used to have 3 of these, and non of them gave me any hard time.

I don't see anyone feel disappointed when they get their hand on the D-777 and other legendary discman. Grab it while you can. This is a very nice discman. You don't want to pass up this opportunity. Remember, you always can get the 955, and ej1000 when you have more money, but the chance of getting the D-777 is very rare. Take my advice, and you'll be surprised.

appar111,

As a previous owner of your 955 and a owner of a D777. I don't advise you to trade the 955 for a D777. Given that you are using Koss Portapros because you can only hear a marginal sound improvement after changing to D777. OTOH, if you use revealing HPs like ETYs, the difference is night and day. I think D777 is not that great for portable use due to; 1) shorter battery life, 2) not so well implmented anti shock system. If these are not your concern then go for it but I would recommend you go straight for a D900/905 instead of D777 as advised by Purk.

It easier to said than done, D-E905 should not be too difficult to find in HK. However, Apart111 live in Ohio, and honestly, I don't think he will find his D-E900. Given that the last time I've seen the D-E900 in Ebay is 8 or 9 months ago and the final bid was 240 dollars. That's why I did advice him that way. We (Duncan, you, and me) are very fortunated to own the D-E905 and appreciated its performance, but for everyone in U.S. this discman is too rare. D-515 and D-E900 are too rare to find in Ebay.
