I just received my D-777 from an Ebay seller and everything looks great except 2 things.

1. No gumstick(?) batteries. I mailed the seller and Should hear back tonight. Just in case she doesn't have them, could someone help me in locating some? It seems until I put some in,I can't even try out the unit.

2. It seems that I can't use the line out with the battery pack attached. Now in my opinion, this is one major bummer. The extra batteries is what allows you to listen for long periods of time with the line out with an amp. I NEED LINE OUT.
Any thoughts on this or am I missing something here? I hope I am.
Please,help,,,,,,,,,,,

I assume he wants to be able to use this portably. My suggestion would be to buy a few extra rechargable gumsticks and have them at the ready when the others run out...that way you can use the lineout and still have enough battery life to last you a while.

PeterR, Thank you for voicing my sentiments. I was wondering the same thing when I got the player today. Whatever it was they were on must have been given to them by sonys competition.

Strohmie, Thank you for being correct on my use of portability. The extra gum sticks will have to be the ticket.Does anyone know where I can get some of them?

D-EJ915,Thank you for the ghetto fix. I think I will mail Sony and ask them if they will do that for me. I would think they would want to correct their mistake.

Any other help or comments are welcome. I'm dying here since I can't even try this "high ticket player". HELP>..........

Thanks bong for the ebay suggestion but I am hoping to find some thru a retailer or here on headfi. So far I haven't seen any reliable sellers on the web.

Does anyone know of a reliable retailer that sells them for $20-$25's?

how many battery powered amplifiers were there in 1995??

The line out is right next door to the 4.5v DC mains inlet which is also hidden by the battery pack normally... maybe that tells you what Sonys original intention was for this players line out

Yes, the line out is next to the power jack on all Discmen I've seen so far.
The D-35 uses a similar external battery case, and both jacks are therefore on the left side of the player...

I guess they had boostaroos way back then...

I see the point though... it does seem to defeat the object of the idea, by hiding it

This issue has been written about before. I agree it sucks that the line out is blocked, but you wouldn't want to use it anyway. The headphone out sounds soooo much better with and without an amp.

You mean you feed the external amp from the headphone out and get better results than from the line out? That's interesting. As the input impedance of the amplifier is usually a more than easy enough load, all the additional headamp chip in the signal path could hope for would be not to degrade the signal too much...
