Does anyone know roughly what the battery life is on the Sony D-777 using just the Ni-MH gumstick batteries? And also what the battery life would be with the extra battery case attached? I'm going to be getting one soon (hopefully) and want to know if this purchase overall will be worth trading a D-EJ955 for...

I will not be using an amp-- just Portapros or MX500's straight out of the headphone. I've heard the newer Sony's have better line out's than the D-777, but since I won't be using it, that won't make much difference to me.

Also, can anyone recommend any other good headphones to use (ampless) with the D-777?

thanks!
Josh

Battery life for mine with gumstick battery is like 6 hours at most. I don't have the external battery holder so I don't know what that would be. I tried the latest and most expensive Sony PCDPs and think that the Sony 777 is better overall and has a great line out. The 777 has an excellent headphone out also and can be used with a lot of different headphones. If you like earbuds then you can try the Sony MDR-E888s. Another good choice would be the Grado SR60.

Is that battery life using the NH-14WM batteries or the NH-6Wm batteries? Or I think Sony also has a Ni-Cad gumstick that they use in units like the 955 and 825.

I would just hate to get a unit that has poor battery life (compared to more modern sonys which can get around 20 hours off of 2 Ni-MH gumstick batteries). The trade-off is that the headphone out would be much better and wouldn't require that I lug around a portable amp....

I've gotten 7-8 with my NH-9WM's. I just used it a week ago on a cross country flight for the entire time (7 and a half hours of time in an airplane) and it worked with no problems.

Apart111,
You always can get the NH-14wm to improve the batt life. The 14wm has 1400mah, while the 9wm has 1000mah. I never tested the batt life of my d-777. Don't expect more than 8 or 9 hours from it. Good luck.

What about when the external AA battery pack is attached? I'm just reaching the point where I only want to lug the player and headphones around, and not an amp, another cord, a bag for it all....etc.

Then again, for really portable stuff, I always rely on my R900 anyway....

With a pair of 1400mah gumsticks and a pair of high quality alkaline AAs I can easily get 30+ hours out of my D777...

The longest continual usage... I'd say sits around 17 hours though

Duncan,
I've never done that. How about AA + NiMH in the D-E900? I pretty much let d-e900 collecting dust, b/c my D- 515 and D-303's line out is clearly better than my D-E900.
