In terms of sound quality, is D-303 far superior to D-777? By chance, I see both D-303 and D-777 both selling for slightly under USD100 in a Chinese site. Should I sacrifice the portability of D-777 for the ultimate listen experience of D-303? Please enlightenen me.

One thing makes me hesitate is that D-777 is well-known for punchy bass. Will rock music be more enjoyable on D-777 than 303?

No. The D-777 is the best of the Sony's that I have heard that offers skip protection. However, IMO it's not as good as the best of the early ones that didn't...and the D-303 is one of the best of those.

Old school Sonys sound very convincing even with my RS1s

The only hesitation that i'd have with the 303 over the 777 is that people report that the headphone output of the 303 is a bit too quiet...

...that said, its said that the 303 has the best line-out of any Sony PCDP period... hopefully i'll get the chance to find out myself before too long

It's lethal enough as I will only use the headphone output.... What do you mean by quiet? It can't push cans like HK580? Or just sound too gentle and flat for impactful music?

Silver...

I'm really not qualified to say, as i've only heard a D303 for no more than 5 minutes, but others have reported that the amp isn't as loud / powerful as other Discmen from the same period...

I'm really not sure, if that is the case that it would power HD580s to an adequate level, but i'm going to step to one side and let someone who has the unit answer on my behalf

thanks

For now, to my ears the D211 owns rock music...

I'd be interested in a D303 / D211 comparison

The D-303's headphone out is rated at 5mW@16 Ohm. In my measurements I got 1.2mW into a 300 Ohm load (like the Sennheisers) and 5mW into 33 Ohm (like the Grados). A single mW into the Sennheisers can already get surprisingly loud, although for the peaks you wish for some more headroom. With the Grados you're good for 105dB, which isn't that bad, should work fine.
The line out is clearly the strong point of the 303, however...

No, wish I had...
