How do I do this? I just received the Senn HD-414 (I think) pads to replace the bowl pads on my Grados. They feel and look great (I love that obnoxious yellow! on HEADPHONES!) but I can definitely tell they need holes cut in them to sound their best.

In the last thread about them, someone mentioned using a "socket." This is some kind of tool as far as I know. I'm not at all mechanically inclined, so could someone post a description and preferably a picture of the exact thing I need (and its size)?

I desire to have these holes perfectly circular... I'm anal like that. Help appreciated!

Do you know what a ratchet wrench is? Check out any Sears tool ad in the newspaper and it will show a mechanics tool set for sale. Sockets are the interchangeable bits of various sizes that fit on the end of a ratchet wrench and are used to tighten and loosen nuts and the like.

A suggested size is 30-33mm or about 1-1/4" (fairly large sockets).

Thanks. My dad has a Sears toolbox in the garage with some of those in it.

So if I end up having the right one, do I just ... push it (hard) through the pad? Or use it as a guide to cut with? I guess I could figure that part out on my own...

1 1/4" is a pretty big , but looking at the bowl pads themselves... those holes are pretty big too, heh. So that sounds right.

Boy, these things really are a change from the bowl pads. My ears... so comfortable... ahhhhhh....

Use it as a guide. I used an Xacto knife to do the actual cutting. The hole will wind up being just about the same size as the mounting hole that's already there.
