after taking down all of my asia posters this morning (sellouts!) i had a lot of extra poster-tak putty, so i thought, why not? my normal ety tips are at etymotics getting steam cleaned, so i made a mold of my outer ear using the putty, and with surgical precision inserted the ety drivers:

i then did my morning 1/2 hour on the exercise bike (i need new d-cell batteries!), this is what my new custom putty iem's look like after:

the isolation and sound quality is probably close to what God hears when he plays his stereo. it is that good.the putty hardened somewhat after a few hours though, and i needed to pry it out with a screwdriver, but it was no less painful the regular ety tips.

steam cleaned?

absolutely. it is included in the super premium platinum er4 package, free steam cleaning of bi or tri-flanges at the factory. only take a month or so, and costs $40 for postage, but it is sooooo worth it.

Lmao. I'll have to try that. I've actually got some of that stuff lying around. I'll probably go ahead and make some ear impressions, but after they "harden" a bit I'm going to fire 'em at maybe 250 degrees for a half hour or so in my oven and see where that takes me. I'm just trying to see if you could get a more permanent solution out of this material. I also wonder how it would compare to my All Fix Epoxy DIY ear molds I made.

Very nice idea!

thanks!

for maximum isolation i invented the drum-coupling mold:

the end of the tube seals against the eardrum, forming a tight seal. i tested it by knocking the muffler off my '85 deisel rabbit and driving real fast to wal-mart for some murine ear-cleaner. i have to say, i couldn't hear anything!

If you're going to go that far, you might want to consider a putty material that's designed to harden in the oven...e.g. Sculpey (here and here) or FIMO. Just a thought.

How about All Fix Epoxy; something that doesn't need to be fired at all to harden?

Check it out HERE.

The first batch were quite ugly. Look further in the thread to find my clear acrylic molds. Much better aesthetics, but I couldn't ever really get the fit JUST right. Ran out of expendable cash to waste on Crystal Memories Kit's, lol. I might try my hand at it again. Right now though, I have some of this poster putty lying around. Worth a shot. My ears have been through hell and back again. I think I'm ready for anything.

I cut two small holes in my skull, removed the tips from my Etys, and inserted the barrels into the frontal lobes of my brain. Oddly, the treble seems a bit rolled off. I'm going to try different areas until I get the sound just right.
