Hello head-fi, i'm pretty new to whole community and after researching for a long period i think i'm probably going to go for the Grado SR60i or 80i or the Ultrasone 20th Anniversary. I've heard lots of comfort issues with the grados but also heard that they can be replaced to be over-ear without the inside/cush touching the ear. i'm confused with the shapes such as S shape, L shape and G shape. i'm getting confused with these hence i'm new to the community and headphones in general.

also, can these be slapped on to the stock grado?

thanks in advance

Yes those will fit right on a Grado, and if you go to the Sennheiser website and look up HD414 replacement earpads you will get them for only $4.35 per pair rather than $12.

The Senn pads can also be modified.  You cut a hole in the center of the pad, about the size of a quarter, then stretch that freshly cut hole over the earcups.  This is called a reverse quarter mod and is the most comfortable way I found of using them.

Try them without modification first, and see if you like them ok that way.  If they feel scratchy, wash them with some mild soap.

The S-Cush Comfies are the stock pads on the lower level Grado's.  I found them to be very irritating, even after washing.

The L-Cush have a hole through the center, and are firmer.  Many find these to be the best for comfort, but like all the Grado pads, opinions differ.

The G Cush pads are really meant for some of the upper tier Grado's and most find that they ruin the sound of the SR60's or SR80's by wiping out the bass and turning an already bright headphone into something very shrill.  But they can be very comfortable since they fit over the ears, not on them.

I personally liked the Sennheiser pads (reverse quarter modded) the best of these that I tried.  But I eventually made my own custom pads and used the sock mod to cover them.  Very few people want to go to that amount of trouble with the pads though.
