Cult headphones

for me 'cult status' means an almost irrationally devoted following to something that the masses don't necessarily get...but when you get it, you GET IT
I immediately thought of the Sony MDR 7506 and Koss Porta Pro (for those of us that don't buy from the top shelf)

I've sold or returned somewhere close to 10k worth of audio gear because of my HD668B (and its hyperactive counterpart, the SR850). I'm done!

That is what I was thinking. I was surprised to see HD6xx series mentioned as they have a fairly large following.

My nominations would be Yamaha orthos, KSC75/Porta Pro and the Superlux HD668B.

DT48 - they pretty much started it all
DT770 - any music you listen to was probably mastered using these at some point. Plus they sound incredible
DT880 - they have the ability to match headphones costing far more than their current price
HD600/HD650 - they are excellent “amp tattletales”, if you ever want to hear what your amp or basically entire setup sounds like, use these. They’re truly chameleons in a lot of ways and in my opinion, solely responsible for the insane headphone amp market today.

In my personal experience:
AKG K 240 Sextett (a NOS-Sextett brought up my headphone interests in 2010 new)
Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro(fessional) (the old one with 600 Ohm).
Beyerdynamic DT 531 (because the nice nickname "Groovalizer", in fact its a unspectacular midclass hp of the 90s for several cases)
Beyerdynamic T 90 (wiil I get to know the famous peak some day?)
The Headphones in the second line that are worth a discover, for example Sennheiser HD 530 behind HD 540/HD 560 and German Maestro GMP 400 behind Beyerdynamic DT 880, AKG K 701/K 702 and Sennheiser HD 600.

We all know about the Sennheiser's and Beyer's but a new headphone that will be cult status (already is for me) has to be the Focal Elear. I would also say the LCD's would be in the same category.

I'm surprised not to see the Audio-Technica L3000, the leatherhead. It's more like mythical though, especially the green leather version.

I'd also add Sony Qualia, too.

I'd consider cult the TakeT piezoelectric headphones, too.

Sennheiser HD-414, the first open-style headphones EVER.
