I have a heck of a time resizing to 100x100 and 20kb while maintaining quality.

Using Photoshop elements with very little sucess.

Whats the easiest method. I see some big Avatars that look great and I just cant do it.

I normally use the resize tool on Photobucket after I upload the picture. Hasn't given me any problems so far, but there have been a few images I've wanted to use that stay just a few kb over 20 no matter what I try. What's the point of the size limit if you're using an external source to host the image anyways?

So yeah, I'm also a bit curious as to how you can get some images under that 20kb mark without killing the image quality.

Dunno, i've never had a problem using The GIMP ... images with less colours will compress better though. But still, 100x100 is really tiny, so unless you're trying to save with no compression there shouldn't be a problem

I first throw the pic I want in Photoshop. Resize the image to 100x100. Then "save as webfile" and it automatically opens in Imageready. Change the amount of colours to 256 and you should get there. Good Luck.

Hmm, Had that in the beginning as well. Trying to figure out what you should do...You did open it first in Photoshop and resized it with the "resample image" on and than opened it in imageready? If you did I don't know how to help you I guess....thinking thinking...

I tried it and it looks in photo shop that the file is very small 9kb

but when I try to put it up Head-fi says its 35KB too big???

256 color tried gif and jpeg

You have to save it in Image Ready before you can use it, and then be certain which file you're selecting when you upload to Head-Fi.

The Photoshop Save for Web doesn't lie - but note that you also have to select the window that displays the lower file size, too. You could just be saving back the original each time.

Use the "4-up" feature under the Save for Web - this makes everything much clearer and you can see the progression of quality reduction. Again, whichever window you've clicked in - it will have a slightly darker border around it - will be the one that gets saved.

Just some suggestions ...

What I do:

1. Take photo.

2. Open in PS CS2.

3. Resize/crop to 100x100 using bicubic resampling.

4. Save as 256 colour .gif, no dithering.

Sometimes I do this (because it's easier to do the cropping):

1. Take photo.

2. Resize one dimension to 100 using a freeware programme called FastStone Photo Resizer (which has bicubic resampling).

3. Save as maximum quality JPEG or BMP.

4a. Open in MS Paint and do cropping to 100x100. Save as BMP.

(4b. If colours require fixing, I use PS CS2 again)

5. Open in PS CS2, save as .gif

Have you got unflattened layers? Could be too many colours, too. Go 256 and "save for web" and try a jpg of medium quality.

I usually perform these steps:
1. Open the picture/image in Seashore.
2. Crop the image
3. Resize to 100x100 pixels
4. Save

Then, if I am using a PNG (which I usually do) run it through OptiPNG.
