Cowon Plenue R - All Round Player
Apr 11, 2018 at 12:04 PM Post #213 of 448
I got Cowon Plenue R This week
I have been playing with it
and this is my impression so far
Is an excelent audio player and one of the best i had for this price

Holding it in my hand feel so good the stylish black backside
in combination with the lovely Polaris star silver color
the screen is bright and look just wonderful.
I love black on Audio players.
Buttons are rock solid.

I love the Uci themes Cowon put on the music player
there are several to choose from all from a Vu meter to a peak meter
to go with the music for estetic enjoyment
I love best the Dark theme with Triangle button

With a whopping 128Gb it is very apreciated to have such big storage
for a price of 32gb.
I only wish it had speakers and a Radio

Plenue R has led colors on powerbutton that flashes
blue,red,yellow,purple,green and white.

I am not sure how it work but acording instruction book
it depend on the music quality, where blue, purple, yellow change
depending on music.
Red led light when music player charges, White light when music is paused
and Green light i think when turn it on.

Can someone check if this happen to them too
it seem for me the Led light only flash when screen is off in saving mode
and music playing not when screen is on.
would have be nice to have led color flash when screen is on as option.

But Cowon plenue R sure has potential
having blue,red,yellow,green,white led light
Cowon should make it so we can choose Led color as option in menu
in settings is possible to turn on/off led light but not change color of led.
it change acording the music, so we usualy only see it in one color.
except when charge when it get red, and white when music paused.
Maybe a future firmware upgrade can make color choice of led an option in menu.

I found Cowon Plenue R perform well on my Denon Ah-mm400 headphones
it has very loud volume which is good, by choosing Usa being in Europe
i probaly bypassed the Eu volume sound limitation and get sound much louder
it goes all up to 140 but i have it around 50 for now.
i also played around with the EQ settings a bit.

A problem I encountered was
battery screen saving mode
It was set ON to 1 minute and can be set to any length
or turned off.

After 1 minute screen would Dim goes darker (lovely)
then shortly after Screen goes completely off (Not so lovely)

What i would like is having Battery saving mode to
Dim the screen goes darker after 1 minute then stay like that
and Screen Not go Off completely

I checked settings there was an option to Turn off the battery saving
then screen would stay on all the time, not goes black but not goes dim either
was able to turn battery savings off
then screen not turn OFF , and screen also dont dim at all.

I found no option to have Screen saver Dim it darker after 1 minute
separate from blacking the screen off shortly after.
Thats sad.
would like that there was a Powersaving mode
only for the Dimming to make screen darker
without turning the screen completely OFF shortly after.

I hope cowon make more Uci themes they sure good at it.
specialy love Black themes with Dark neon red characters.
would be good if is possible to change color of file explorer in music menu
in uci themes, then i could put it dark with red (now is dark with orange)

I bought Cowon plenue R because it look beautiful
and sound Awesome, And Cowon is the best Mp3 player brand in the world.
came as no surprise being South korea that invented Mp3 players.

I hope Cowon fix the Led color make it possible to manually choose color
i like it as an option.
I love Red and purple led, but i get Blue and only red when charging.
and white when music is paused.

Btw, I had a Battery depleat problem today 24 hours after using Cowon plenue R
Yesterday i tried Cowon plenue R for first time, Battery indicator was Full
before i turned it off after trying it to play some music for half an hour.
Then i Turn completely off Cowon plenue R pressing the Powerbutton 2 seconds

Today i turn it on and Cowon plenue R dont turn on
OH NO i though, then i conected it to Pc usb to charge battery and Led flashed red
Then i turned it on after 1 minute charge and Led light turn Green and message on screen
Low battery then it turn Off screen and Led light goes from Green to Red charging light again.

Is it normal that battery can get depleated that fast
i hope battery is fine. update...battery charged a bit after
30 minuts now i have 1 bar of battery and it conect and turn on

Now i need a Cowon plenue R leather case
I dont know where i can get the Leather case R from
it must be somewhere in europe.

Oh... Is there a way to Turn on the screen and operate cowon plenue R
while is conected to Pc charging, or only when not conected and on battery only?

update:
Guys i found out something
i read that cowon players battery power mode
has a sleep mode and a hard off mode.
In sleep mode the battery will continue to drain you have to go to settings and hit power off to turn it off that Turn off the Battery screensaver
Then when clicking power button it Power OFF instead of goes into sleep mode
when pressing Power button to turn it off.
What i did was just hold power button and turned off then i though it was completely off
i must check on this maybe thats why caused the battery depleat
i will also check if bluetooth was on or off

This is extended review after 2 days of use
Hope you enjoy
This is Cowon masterpieze of medium range Cowon Plenue R
Is one of the best high fidelity dap that i bought of this price range
with absolutely unbeatable sound performance
I never heard a sound so sharp and good dedicated
to profesional music lovers.
Plenue R is the last technological advancement
Innovative design of Futuristic avantgarde luxury
with sophisticated aluminum art
Comes in Silver star polaris color as Cowon Call it
with south korean techology, the land that invented the mp3 player.
Backside is very elegant and futuristic
rubber resin finish with metal particles and solid side buttons.
It is rigid and comfortable in the hand
with super bright Amoled 800x480 screen
128Gb memory to a supergood price, is some of the best you can get
in quality for this price.

comes with many Uci Menu themes that are lightyears ahead of other audio players.
Led light indicators that change light by music source
Blue, purple, yellow, white, red and green, Top notch from South korea.
Would have been nice if we could choose led color when we wanted.

High volume (pick usa as country to get loudest volume if you are in europe to bypass eu sound output limit)
Sound very good in combination with my Denon Ah-MH400 headset
This Player has it all is the best of the lot for this price is just awesome.

For these particular futuristic technical characteristics I can recommend it.
Cowon is universally known as some of the best in mp3 players
for its high quality and innovative design.

Cowon Plenue R Towards the Future one of the most beautiful players in the world
It is a Diamond of the future.

I want to add that i had 2 problems with mine in first days of use
First is Battery depleated after short use and turning it off
for 1 day, then when turning it on battery was depleated
after charging it battery is now full so hope that battery is fine.

The other problem i had today when conecting it to Pc
right now it didnt conect when plugging it in usb
so i had to disconect and conect it again and then it conected
i dont know what happened but now it conected again.
It conect fast and drag and drop files fast atleast.

Conclusion Excelent Audio player with Futuristic inovative design Love it.

Well after an enormous amount of ummm-ing and ahhh-ing, and taking longer to decide than a kid with 10 cents in a candy store, I finally put in an order for the Plenue R :)

I've got a Plenue M, but looking for a slightly different sound signature. For some tracks/albums it sounds fantastic, but others feels a bit congested. The M also has the strange feature of the custom JetEffect settings being quite sluggish (I saw this noted on the headfonics review too). I've previously had the Plenue D and P1, and before that the J3. I'm thinking based on reviews (thanks Twister!) and opinions on here the PR is likely to be a keeper for me for a number of years. I kept my J3 for about 5 years, and it got plenty of love/abuse. I love the easy to use UI of the larger Plenue players (the UI on the smaller series like Plenue D isn't as great), I listen on wired headphones only but Bluetooth will come in handy when I'm in other people's cars/places, and with JetEffect I know I'll be able to get enough bass to keep my ears happy - I'm no basshead, but typically find myself wanting to push the lower end up a few decibels on most players, and on some players the EQ just doesn't sound right, or doesn't even work (*cough* AK70 *cough*).

So the R ticks all those boxes. I've got some HD6XXs, and don't expect the Plenue R will be able to drive those properly, so that's the only downside I'm seeing at the moment. But since the HD6XXs are open backs I only use them at home and have a micro iDSD on the way to cover that base (and could potentially use the audio out of the PR to feed into the iDSD amp section if I wanted). The R will be my portable player and will have plenty of power for easier to drive closed back cans - both those I have (Momentum 2s, B&W P7s) and those I've got an eye on in the future (99 classics, Campfire Cascades, HD630VBs). I've never used balanced before so that will be something new once I get suitable cans and cables to plug in. I also went with a screen protector and leather case since I'm thinking this will be my go-to player for the foreseeable future and want it to last the distance.

Thanks everyone on this thread for the info you've shared. I'll post some thoughts too once I've had the R a few weeks and got some burn-in.

In what shop did you buy Leather case for Plenue R
i like to get leather case from a reliable shop, why can i not get a leather case with the player

In all honesty I didn't find many options around for places to buy a case. I ended up getting one from this seller on ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Japan-COWO...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649
Also ordered the screen protector from the same seller (I did wonder if a P1/M screen protector would fit, which is available on amazon.com - I think it would, but ended up just buying the R version)

Advanced mp3 players in the UK also has cases, but I couldn't buy it from there as they only ship within the EU:

Thanks, That seller listing say Does not ship to Spain so cant buy it from him.
I should get a leather case i dont dare to use cowon plenue R outside without it.

One question is it worth upgrading firmware, Mine came with Firmware 1.10 installed
there is only one firmware upgrade for cowon plenue R firmware 1.20
http://www.cowonglobal.com/zeroboar...m&bmenu=support&desc=asc&no=602&bmenu=support

I see what new it offer for me it not offer anything new
like new themes, more options in menu, no important bug fixes.

Is it realy worth upgrade to this firmware, is usualy recomended have the newest firmware
but this one not offer anything new and cowon plenue R works so fine already out of the box with firmware 1.10
So i should just pass and wait until Firmware 1.30?
Thanks

Box opened Plenue R on advancedmp3players.co.uk for £400.00
Given the current Pound exchange rate and AMP3 high shipping costs touside of the UK, this is not a very good bargain.
In the rest of Europe, Plenue R is worth 529€ brand new and very often discounted between 459 and 479€.
With another 10% it would much better, but the permanent 10% code doesn't work on "box opened".

I am happy with Cowon Plenue R except for the Battery problem
I am still testing and it seem the Battery run out way too fast
Not sure how long it should last
But I leave the player Off for 24 Hours and then when i turn it on
I get 1 Battery bar instead of 3 Full battery bar after a full charge.

Bluetooth is turned off, I turn the player completely off
i think it drain more when player is in sleep modus (screen off not fully off)
then Led light blink all the time
Now i have turned off Led light, and turned on screensaver to see if it help.

Is a pity because this battery drain i did not have with Cowon plenue D
I am not sure if is normal i dont like the way the battery work
It should have had a Percent indicator for battery so i could easy see how fast
battery run out.

Btw, battery run out fast without listening to music
but i was playing with my screen to check album art and songs i transfered
so still need to do more testing just leaving it on standby without touching
it at all.

I got mine from Poland

I have the Plenue J, and I experience the same problem with battery going flat much too quickly if I leave it in sleep mode, but Cowon won't allow customers to disable library-scan during boot-up, so we have to choose between using sleep-mode which drains the battery, or fully switched-off, which saves the battery but takes a minute or more to boot-up, every time the player is switched-on.

It's unbelievable stupidity.

Anyone would think Cowon are an inexperienced DAP company, not one that has been in business for decades.

Battery i am testing now, I found this nice review
https://www.head-fi.org/showcase/cowon-plenue-r.22746/reviews

Is a beutiful review and there it say Battery playing music nonstop it last 16-17 hours.
This i have to test.

I got like 24 hours with the player turned completely off (leaving it off not playing music),
and that worried me
because i have cowon plenue D and also non cowon players
and they can last for weeks with the power turned completely off they hold the charge
but it seem like Plenue R dont do.
after 24 hours it was depleated.

This i will now test, First i charge the Plenue R now on my Pc until Led light is Green (fully charged)
Then i will switch off Led light completely (to save battery) then add sleepmode on.
Then i put it into sleep mode (without led light flashing)
to see how long it hold battery, without playing music at all.

Then i will test the same with Plenue R completely turned off (bluetooth also turned off)
after 24 hours i would like battery indicator to still say full because i have not used it.
I did this before and it did show half battery but Led indicator was turned on (which shouldnt blink when completely turned off)
however it may have drained some of the battery.

Finaly i will put a song on repeat for like 10 hours and check every hour to see if battery indicator drop.
this will take some time but now that i totaly finished moving all my songs from Pc to Plenue R
which is an awesome player (Except for battery life) then i can work on the battery.

What i like with Cowon Plenue R
is that it dont Freeze or Lag that other Non cowon player i have do, that is so good and Cowon make good players.
is fast and smooth compared to them, only battery that is sad but is not so long

Update:
Haha I read Cowon plenue D have 100 hours of battery life playing mp3
while cowon Plenue R have 17 hours so is like 5 times lesser battery.
thats not so okey, but i am fine with it
if i can get Cowon plenue R to hold t he charge for atleast a week
if completely turned off and not using it
so i dont have to charge it every day those days i dont use it
