Just spent hours before bed trying to find the perfect settings for my RE0's... Will post later

BBE: Off/ 4 - 6
Mach3Bass: 4
3D Surround: Off
MP Enhance: On

Stereo Enhance: Off
Reverb: Off

Conclusions:
Of course, I like to think that the BBE is just a 'sound signature' that the J3 is able to portray through a certain algorithm. This signature, is hit or miss with different people (as you can see by the differences in various EQ settings) - Thus, you should either turn it off (as I have) or leave it somewhere between 4 - 6

Note: Will continue to update this...

I have been using the IE8 with the J3 for quite some time and have found the following to be the best EQ to my ears:

-3 105Hz Wide                      BBE - 8
0 500Hz Normal                    Mach3Bass - 6
0 1.1kHz Wide                      MP Enhance - OFF for FLAC files ON for MP3's.
0 4.1kHz Normal                   All others off
3 13kHz Wide

This eq brings the IE8 to a nearly flat frequency response which allows their liquid smooth sound signature to be fully appreciated.  Too extreme of adjustments generally doesn't sound natural to my ears.

Have fun with the J3 and the IE8's, a truly awesome portable setup.

I have tried many settings, but the voices in the sound are always too harsh. I'm a noob when it comes to frequencies and eq's etc., but I just want the best out of my 2 music instruments... The settings I use at the moment are:

EQ:
80 Hz: +7, wide
220 Hz: -1, normal
1.4 kHz: +5, narrow
3.0 kHz: +8, normal
11.7 kHz: +9, wide
BBE+:
BBE: +10
Mach3Bass: +6
3D Surround: +3
MP Enhance: on

SE:
SE: +3
Reverb: Off

Can someone please tell me what to do about these settings to create a warmer voice, it's really too harsh (i read the J3 is pretty cold sound, but this is ridiculous).

That used to bug me with my S9 (the J3 is pretty much an updated S9). After a long time of tweaking and trying different suggestions, I managed to get more natural sounding voices by keeping the settings low.

I use all 4 custom settings on my S9 for different headphones, and I have different settings on the 5 band EQ. I have about the same BBE+ and STE settings on all 4 custom EQ settings, though.

I keep BBE at 5, Mach3Bass at between 3 and 5, keep 3D Surround turned off and MP turned on. Stereo enchance is set to 3.

I try to not go overboard with the settings on the 5 band EQ. The setting I use the most looks like this:
80 Hz: +5, wide
300 Hz: 0, normal
780 Hz: -1, wide
4.1 kHz: +1, normal
13 kHz: +1, normal

Of course the headphones you use plays a big part in your EQing. I have managed to tweak a sound that is not too far from the preset Viva settings. Good bass resonance, and overall a perceived neutral sound. I do not like either flat nor an overly EQ'd sound, but try to go for a sound that will appear neutral to my ears (with a slight emphasis on bass).

You might not like my custom EQ settings, but I advice you to toy around with the settings and try to get warmer vocals (and mids). I suspect that the 3D surround setting is part of the reason that vocals can sound "cold" on Cowon DAP's...

So I will try to post some of the most popular/recommended eq settings posted from a cowon MINI PMP, which is a korean fansite of sorts for anything related to cowon products. These might not be necessarily good depending on your preference but I have been enjoying them.

..............
If you don't like 'harsh' voices why the hell do you have bbe on 10

If someone can give me settings for TF-10 and ATH-ESW9 I think I will buy myself one of these fabled players. The 8gb + 32gb card is quite reasonable.

I'd go for the 16/32 one - saves you the trouble of erasing files

Ok, as promised I've come back with a refined group of settings (compared to my last lot)

Last time it was:

Quote:
3+ 80HZ (WIDE)

0+ 300HZ (NARROW)

3+ 1.4KHZ (NORMAL)

4+ 4.1KHZ (WIDE)

4+ 6.9 KHZ (WIDE)

BBE: Off/ 4 - 6

Mach3Bass: 4

3D Surround: Off

MP Enhance: On

Stereo Enhance: Off

Reverb: Off

What I've been using these days is:

i just came from a sony a808 and the j3 sounds quite underwhelming to me, perhaps ive grown used to the warm signature of my sony dap, everything sounds a little too airey for my taste. But that's without tweaking the eq/bbe/settings on the j3. i'm currently using a pair of brainwavz m1, and they probably are bottlenecking the j3 because all the details seem to be drowned out. I'm trying it out with my m50 and have my music playing at volume 35 for a satisfactory sound output...

Hi!
I'm using an S9, but here is what I use with my M50

80 Hz- 5 - wide
300 Hz - 2 - wide
1.4 kHz - 6 - wide
4.1 kHz - 6 - wide
11.7 kHz - 5 - wide

BBE:10
Mach3Bass : 1
3D Surround: 1
MP Enhance: On
Stereo Enhance: 2
Reverb: Off

I needed more forward vocals and mids, this is what I've settled on....
Mainly on volume 20-22, but I never go higher....

tried this with my m50 and it sounded a whole lot better...but volume 20-22? how do you manage??
