Over the weekend I decided to spruce up the ol' D2000s a bit. First I recabled them with some wire from navships I had laying around. As you can see, the main body of the cable has a square four strand braid, and wires after the split to the headphones and to the xlr's the wires are just a simple twisted pair. The cable isn't covered with anything, and unfortunately the only color I had around was purple -.-

I also wanted to get rid of the lettering on the cups, so I used rubbing compound and some polishing compound to do the job. Now the cups are pretty shiny (much shinier than the pics show).

you need some higher grit compound/polish and work more elbow grease into those cups, I still see some swirl marks!

Looking pretty good, where did you pick up your xlr connections from? Most places I've seen look to be selling them for 2.60+ for the plugs and more for the panel mounts

Re: the cable, at first listen I thought, "oh gods, what have I done" and took them off. I came back 10 minutes later and put them on, and it sounded great. Over stock cable, I'd say the bass has a slight bit more definition, the highs seem a bit more extended and airy, and everything in general just sounds a tad bit more open and what I call effortless - as in seeming there's no limit to the sound's depth and no sign of strain to make the sound. Overall, same character with slight improvements everywhere, and better perceived detail.

Nebby, I know! I plan on doing a bit more work on them later...don't think I'll get the swirl marks out, though

I got my plugs from Mouser, and as you say they're 2.60+.

nice work! are those silver plated copper cables? what's the awg?

x2. I'm working on my cables right now. I have some solid NAVSHIPS 24awg silver plated OFC to start. I'm using cotton sleeve over the wire (each strand, need to use it up) and am going to do a 4 wire braid with nylon multifilliment over the top (balanced with gold plated connectors).

Yeah, it's 24awg silver plated ofc from navships. Maybe a while from now I'll look into some CCC or silver to recable them again, but it sounds great right now.

Hey Nebby, but you'll have wood cups...that's cool.

haha...I'm just redoing the finish of my D5000's cups. The stock lacquer hides too much grain for my tastes. I am going to try my hand at making my own wood cups, though I'm concerned how the interior shape will affect the sound. Nonetheless it should be interesting

btw, how flexible are the navships silver plated cables?

Ben, It will flex but you have to work it back into position. It's thin stuff and is easy to work with. I just finished putting it all into cotton, now for cutting and braiding.....

Finished recabling mine on the fourth. I don't know what your experiece is so far but initial impression is that the new cable is edgy. Hopefully it will go away with burn in. Did you notice this at all?

An alternative for removing print from the plastic cups of the D2000 and having a good even finish - go to an automotive shop (or a shop that does art glass) and have them glass-beaded for a fine matte finish. All openings and surfaces not to be treated - you'd completely seal (a plastic bag and masking tape always works just fine as protection - just do it tightly, and carefully).

NOTE: see pair Headphiled to open - Larry had to paint the cut. It seems the color of the cups is not thru and thru, but a coating. Any polishing or texturing should be done VERY gingerly.
