I am interested in buying a headset mostly to use for talking in games but also possibly for music. First was wondering what the difference is between a usb headset and a headset that plugs right intot he mic port. second wanted to know if when playing games u can have only the sound of other people talking come through the headset and not all the sound from the game but let that sound come out of main speakers. and finally would the sound quality of the headset also be good enough to listen to music or movies. i was looking maybe to spend around 100 if i had to. i know these are a lot of questions but im at newb at this stuff

Well, Sennheiser makes a headset called the PC155, that is both USB and analog... you can try both methods and see which you like more. The sound quality isn't going to be breathtaking, but it is probably the best sounding gaming headset out there.

I actually did that with a pair of HD600's and a cheap PC microphone.

The main problem with headsets is that they are usually only one speaker. So it's like using a telephone headset, sound only from one side.

You could also get a separate microphone that you put on your desk or monitor, while you wear headphones.

BTW, if you use a mic and speakers, the other person will complain about the echo, since your microphone will be picking up their voice on the speakers, not to mention all the game sounds.

though i do want everything to sound good. i guess i could also always get a headset and a pair of headphones since headsets dont cost too much. so many decisions

. also could someone explain to me the differences between connecting through usb or analog.

I would say you should buy a headset (headphones + mic combo). Probably gonna be the best route for you since you say you don't know the difference between good and bad audio. As for only hearing your vent or ts, just use the in-game settings and turn the game music and sounds down or off. Almost every game I know has them built-in.

Honestly, back out while you can. I just dropped $150 on headphones that are "decent" around here. I'm waiting for funding to get something "decent" to plug them into.

In case anyone hasn't said it yet, sorry for your wallet.
