Hi all. I am busy ripping many of my CDs and am having issues with the copy-controlled varieties. I searched for info but only came across the software-type copy-controlled CDs where simply preventing it from autorunning would help. Mine are not software based though (they are the ones with the thin ring at the end of the data if you look at the CD physically) which I believe is a purposefully corrupt TOC or something along those lines. EAC does not rip them properly (CRC errors with virtually all tracks) and that is with both secure and burst modes. Any ideas?

I'm not sure how the mods view these queries (even though as far as I'm concerned ripping to mp3 for personal use is not morally wrong and is covered by fair use, shame the DMCA contradicts the fair use laws, eh?), but meh.

The ease in which you can rip from these discs is somewhat dependent on your CD/DVD drive. Some don't even notice the protection. I like Plextor drives because mostly they don't notice, but if they do, Plextools has an option 'Enable 1st Session only', which means the drive can only see the music portion of the CD, not the data (and hence protection) part of the disc. I'm not sure if there is any software available to do this with other drives, but if there is, it will cure all your ills...

Good luck.

Hi all. Have not tried anything other than EAC. I rely on CRCs to check accurate rips, as AccurateRip often reports mismatches as locally produced CD's tend to be slightly different to those found in the US (where I believe the AccurateRip DB gets most of its records from).

The problematic CD's I have have the control mechanims used IIRC by EMI and BMG, with this logo:

I believe it uses a fake ToC, false error-correction info and has that clear ring on the outer perimeter of the CD after the data.

I had problems with my Dragonforce - Inhuman Rampage CD. I put it into my drive and it showed up as a data CD with only the bonus music video. EAC would see the tracks, but be unable to rip. What I finally found to work was to rip it using Foobar2000.
