Hello. I have a pair of HD800's and had a problem a faulty 1/4" plug. Even though they were slightly past the warranty period, Sennheiser showed off stellar customer support by sending me a brand new cable. I asked where to ship the faulty cable back and they said I didn't have to. So.......

Since my headphone amp has both balanced and 1/4" outputs, I figured why not try to convert my original stock cable to a 4-pin Balanced XLR. Is this possible? I have been looking online and have not been able to find any straight forward answers or guides.

Any info or points in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The basic idea of it is to snip off the 1/4" and solder an XLR to the end. There should be 4 wires in the cable: one hot and one negative for each cup. There should be a few images floating around Google showing which pin on the XLR is which. Then it's just a matter of soldering and making it look pretty
