Since finding Head-Fi awhile ago, I have been impressed with the knowledge and honestly that the members posess. And their willingness to help out "newbies" (Me, for one ) with simple, down to earth language and suggestions really is admireable.
I am preparing to buy a computer soon, and I was wondering if anyone here could offer me any sites that might be helpful to deceide which type ?? Are there similar sites to Head-Fi that talk about computers ( in this same type of format ) ??

Thanks,
Scully

Try asking your computer question as a new thread in the Member's Lounge... we can be quite helpful

all the computer websites I know are full of terrible teens with lot of money arguing on the X fps you loose on UT2003 if you don't buy the last Radeon 9700. sorry

ok, time to critique the above forums:

[H]ard = modding is too nazi-esque
Overclockers = nice forums, doesn't have the feeling of head-fi
Not famliar with arstechnica.infopop.net
Rage 3d= too biased, IMO. Lots of flames from what i remember
Madonion = I've left, after a massive 10k posts. It used to be great, no longer is.

Madonion has the wrong focus, they are just obsessed with the benchmark. They flame the company that doesn't produce the highest benchmark.

You obiviously haven't been there in a long time

Madonion has moved away from benchmarking just since it's taken so damn long to make 3dmark 2k3. There are some great people there, but the entire forum has just gone down hill, lots of flaming, and just an overall negitive feel to it

i used to do www.sysopt.com forums. just make sure you don't get into political / religious discussions. a few flamers drove many users out. just be prepared to be persuaded to go with the athlon. I'm an Intel supporter myself, as I hate VIA chips. if you go athlon, remember you must buy the best quality power supply and memory possible (or at least www.crucial.com). i also don't suggest overclocking as you'll usually end up spending $50 for the extra duty heatsink and special fan. might as well get a faster proc for the extra $50. and of course there's www.amdmb.com along with www.sharkyextreme.com and www.anandtech.com .

Arstechnica is the best, no questions asked. I have 2400+ posts there (radrd there too)

It's a huge (very active) community though, so sometimes it's a little rough on newbies. Just make sure you use the search function before posting anything and read the posting guidlines.

Actually I found Head-Fi after a recommendation from Xevion on Ars.
