My system is having some strange issue where whenever I even flip the switch on the back of the power supply it turns on and the CDROMs and the fans but the system itsself doesn't turn on. The way its supposed to happen is the power supply is always off (even though the switch on the back is on) until you press the power button on the tower then everything turns on.

I've tried removing the leads from the tower power switch to the motherboard but it does the same thing, i've also tried a different power supply with the same results. I also removed the ethernet connection just in case it was a wake on lan issue. This leads me to believe the problem lies somewhere in the motherboard, a short perhaps.

Anyone else here have this problem, or can you think of a way to remedy it? Thanks!

Most likely the motherboard. Try yanking all cards except video. Also try yanking all extra RAM except for one. (unless you can't run without parity).

Do you get any beeping from the motherboard? Does your hard drive power up?

After you've turned the power on for awhile, try hitting the reset button, instead of turning it off. And if you turn it off, use the case's power button, not the PSU's switch. Keep repeating for awhile. If you eventually get the computer to Boot up, it's definitely a power capacitor in your mobo, which is very cheap to replace.

So then look at your mobo, and look for something that looks like this:

That would most likely be your culprit.

That is weird. I honestly think it's the power supply. It might be sending power to some parts, but not the others. When you hit the rocker switch, it should not turn on. When I turn on my power supply, the only thing that turns on is the tiny power indicator LED's on my mobo. So that means the power supply is not doing it's job correctly. I could be wrong. Try to get your hands on another power supply and see if the same thing happens. You could just go to a store, and return it if that is not the problem.

I don't understand what the problem is. Are you saying with you flip the rocker switch on the power supply, the fans and CDROM go on but the system doesn't start up? I thought that's normal. It happens on multiple of my computers self assembled and a Dell.

If the switch to the powersupply is on, there is power going through the system. That's why that light on the mobo is on.
