Well I'm trying to get a decent compact size home(not portable) CDP which is in the ~$200 range.

Any recommendations?
Or, should I just get the dirt cheap Philips DVP642?

Thanks in advance!

check out the Cyrus cd players at http://www.cyrusaudio.com. These are half the width of conventional components. they also have a nice upgrade path with beefed up external power supplies.
Also Musical Fidelity's http://www.musicalfidelity.com/ X series are the same kind of size.
Sonically the Cyrus is stronger on timbre, the MF is ultra analytical sounding but can be a bit flat. I guess it depends on what kind of music you listen to but both are certainly very good players.
Both are beyond you budget new but you may find older versions on audiogon.
