Hey fellas,

I just picked up a pair of Grado SR60's and they are great except the earpads are like sandpaper on my ears. Are there more comfortable aftermarket pads out there; maybe leather covered pads or less rough foam pads.

Thanks,

good luck with that..the comfies are the most comfortable Grado earpad (some would agree) available..

The pads do break down in surface texture eventually, and your body oils will help to free up the fibers and soften the feel overall..this should do the trick.
For the 60's. consider the Senn HD-414 replacement pads with the quarter hole mod...this pad has a slightly different feel and fit for the 60, and works wonderfully

I got mine from B&H as well.

I wear mine reversed and can wear them for at least ten hours......that was the longest; during a test......but I normally get three or four CDs before someone in the family(or bedtime)causes me to quit!!

No problems!!

Yeah, I just got the SR-60s too (great earphones, huh??) and like you, I don't like the earpads. Very uncomfortable. After reading Zanth's thread, I've been wondering where to buy them too, but you beat me to the question before I did.

A question for those who have the HD-414 pads, have any of you dyed them black? If so, how?

Another one is, how do you wear them reversed? Do you flip them inside out or something?

a few threads came up with title search "dye pads"

Yea it can sound confusing. All you do is flip it 180 degrees- Remove pad, flip over and put back onto the housing.

What is the sonic difference between straight and reversed HD414 pad orientation.
I realize that reversed must be more comfortable esp for people with smaller ears. (drivers mesh screen killing my ears already) But does it loose anything in SQ department this way?
And what is the exact size of the hole to cut for reverse placement?

Thanks

Washing the comfies with soap and water will soften them up a bit.

I just used dishwashing detergent. others have had good luck using shampoo.

Just make sure to rinse well, and make sure they are absolutely dry before reinstalling.

The difference is not night and day though.

There is always Larry's C-pads. But I guess that they might be SLIGHTLY overkill for some SR60's. I found that my pads softened very much as I used them, the oils from my skin breaking down the foam a tad. But as nelamvr6 says, it's not a black and white difference.

When I got my HF-1s the bowl bads had already been shampoo-ed. This in combo with being unafraid to slacken off the headband made them exceptionally comfortable. I can wear my Grados longer than any other circumnaural headphone ive tried excepting the Omega.

Oils from my skin, huh? What if I stopped taking showers for a couple weeks and use my SR-60's everyday? That should soften them up real quick.

This is awesome! As usual a wealth of information.

I'll try washing my pads and see if that does it. I'll probably order the Senn pads anyway and give em a shot.

Thanks everyone!
