Not enough input error!

Classic lover or whatever else - your sonic preferences are needed, if you want good hints for what to audition. What is important for you: Impact? Imaging? Balance/neutrality? Extension? Also important - especially for the source: Would you prefer musicality over comfort (~= vinyl over cd)?

Greetings from Munich!

Manfred / lini

P.S.: Mentioning your price range could also be helpful...

I also love classical music, have the HD600, and plan on getting the Cardas. But you need to give a price range.

You want a portable amp?

If I was you(and I'm Not) I would get an amp first. Probably the Singlepower MpX3 and then start saving for a new source. This way you could at least get some sound out of your HD600's now. You can check out Tuberollers review on this amp or start a thread and ask people who have heard it to give there views on it. If you want more info on the amp sales@singlepower.com or you can PM MIkhail the owner of the CO. through this site. He's a member. Good luck.

If you've got the money for the Pre-Head then you might want top look into the Singlepower Supra. There is a full length review in the amp forum. The full length reviews are at the top of the amp forum page. You need to find people that have heard both amps. You should PM Tuberoller and ask him, I beleive he's heard the singlepower and the Meier amps. I can't tell you what to get, only what I would get. That would be one of the singlepower amps with a set of sylvania VT-231 tubes. Ask around for someone whos heard both amps. I think JMT may have heard both amps at the N. Calif. show, you could ask him.

Just a slightly contrary viewpoint:

While I think that the Singlepower amps are very high quality, and represent a terrific value in their respective price ranges, they are still not a 'no-brainer' for everyone.

First and mostly, these are tube amps. With their stock tubes, I was not blown away by the MPX3. Even with the VT-231's, although there is a marked improvement, I was not blown away to the degree that others have expressed. I have no idea what these Sylvania NOS tubes cost, and add to the "real" price of this amp. Not having heard the TOTL Supra, I can't comment on that model. But tube amps & rolling is definitely not for everyone, especially for a first amp.

Although, if you bought one of the Singlepower amps, and decided you didn't like it for whatever reason, I'm sure you'd have alot of buyers standing in line to take it off your hands.

Jan Meier's and Ray Samuels' amps (neither of which have I heard myself, btw) have op-amp options that allow you to tailor the sound to your musical tastes, and gotten excellent reviews. Just more options for you to think about.

Just to be clear. There's nothing difficult about tube rolling. It's a definite advantage, not a disadvantage.

DITTO. If you can plug in a cord, you can plug in a tube.
