iPod finally supports Windows - fantastic. So, I'm looking at my D-CJ01 and while worthy, it's looking less and less desirable. I've also just reconsidered my previous decision to cancel, and re-ordered a Sharp IM-MT880. That's me fixed for now.

But for my needs, neither MD nor MP3CD quite hits the spot - neither wholly does what I want. I hate having to take 'either or'.

Ideally I'd like one device that:
Plays back high-bitrate MP3 files (320K)
Which sounds good (iPod level)
Which can record from mic, line or optical (up to 320K)
Which stores at least 1 Gig of music (more the better)
Fast USB2 or Firewire sync, upload and download of music
And is the size of an iPod.

I guess I'm talking about a recording iPod.

When can we expect something like this? Any Appleheads got any rumors (that you won't be arrested for by the Cupertino Gestapos)?

Will Archos scale things down and make something remotely desirable?

Any new companies on the horizon?

I know this isn't what you're looking for, but I thought you might want to keep an eye on this company.

I don't know anything about them, but I found this product to be slightly interesting.
