Hello, my name is Geoff, I'm going to be a college student this upcoming fall, and I am in search of a new pair of headphones. I am a music geek, but I have never been much of an audiophile. I am in search of  either over-the-ear headphones or earbuds. I don't necessarily have a preference of type, but I am looking for headphones that are durable, decently portable, have good sound isolation/cancellation, and excellent sound quality. I listen to primarily indie and folk, but I often listen to hip-hop and electronic. Also, bluetooth would be a great addition, especially with rumors the next iPhone could be getting rid of the aux port. Lastly, my budget would be preferably under $200. Are there any headphones/earbuds that fit this criteria? Thanks in advance for the help -Geoff S.

I've always had earbuds in the past due to portability, but I know that over-the-ears often are much better quality and value. I guess I would prefer earbud, if I had to choose, however. I have stayed clear of full headphones due to the weight, lack of portability, sweatiness it causes on the ear, and the "dent" it puts in your hair.

Geoff,

Can't help you with specifics due to your preferences. But I would recommend checking out Inner Fidelity (.com) as their Walll of Fame will have 'cans that meet your needs. Tyll's reviews have the advantage of coming from one person so as you read and/or buy his thoughts, you get a sense of what other cans might sound like. However, there is much more to hearing than words can easily convey. So you have to dabble.

If you're not an audiophile, then just get something inexpensive until you discover what you're interested in. Otherwise you risk spending a lot on something you dislike. I don't "fully like" half of the 'cans on my list below, for example.

Good luck.

Is this for a phone? If so, you probably want something that includes a mic and remote. Bluetooth greatly reduces sound quality, so most here avoid it. Do you want something with extra bass or something that sounds more neutral? You can usually get the same sound quality at a lower price by using IEMs(in the ear canal isolating earphones). IEMs though don't tend to last as long as headphones. when I want isolation I use IEMs, as my ears overheat much too quickly when using closed headphones. The problem with isolation though is that it can be dangerous in some situations, such as when you are crossing traffic intersections. I use open earphones or headphones and keep the volume low when I am walking around.
