Anyone here eat coffee beans straight? I ate them straight for the first time last week when my homework group and I were working into the wee hours of the morning. They taste surprisingly good, and are quite a bit more concentrated than brewed stuff. Do they have any adverse effects on health? Certainly there must be a reason why normal coffee is filtered...? hmmm....

btw, they were imported columbian beans

I eat chocoate covered roasted coffee beans occasionally. I don't think they are a problem, healthwise that is, unless you eat enough to get over caffinated. I do enjoy the taste.

During crunches at the game company I worked for, chocolate covered espresso beans washed down with Mountain Dew were the norm.

Make sure you brush or rinse after eating them. Those little black bits don't look good when you smile.

Caffeine in general is not exactly the most healthy of substances, but coffee beans on their own are not any less healthy than the other variations.

Anyone else ever eaten a whole bag of chocolate covered beans, only to realise later that they felt like they had just snorted a line of coke?

haha, I didn't know eating coffee beans was so popular. Chocolate covered huh? I might have to try doing that next time.

elipsis: well, that's only partially true. I heard of some people smoking coffee beans. Surely that is less healthy that other forms.

Caffeine is a very old and well tested drug and the health benefits are numerous. They include pain relief, increased metabolism, and alertness. While it is true that the drug can excite a heart condition and it is a diahretic, these seem to be the worst of its offenses.

Too often the public is emotional, reactionary and easily manipulated by media and advertising. The health movement against caffeine is not one spawned by research but one spawned by firms hoping to counter market caffeine free products.

In my experience, I've gotten far worse "sugar crashes" from drinking sugar loaded caffeine free drinks than I have from the traditional kind. Caffeine free coffee, meanwhile, I place on the products for idiots list along with O'Douls and Christian Rock.

Please people, let's keep tea and coffee legal.

Agreed. And the chemicals they use to decaffinate the beans are pretty toxic stuff as well.

But then again, Kelly, you have an idiot agreeing with you.

(hint: I don't drink O'Douls)

Do you work for a coffee company or something? I'm as big a caffeine fiend as the next person, but I don't deny that, when used on a daily basis, it's not particularly good for me.

Caffeine's worst features are, in my opinion, the combination of its stimulating effects and its addictive nature. It also appears to have a relatively short half-life in the human bloodstream, which results in me drinking cup after cup of it when I'm tired and need to get through something.

I also have noticeably increased irritability, poor concentration and even chest pains at the end of a day when I've drunk more than two or three cups of coffee.

Caffeine is good in its place, but it's too much of a lifestyle drug in our culture. If you need a quick fix in a bad situation, by all means, go for some coffee. Otherwise, on a day to day basis, get more exercise, drink more water and eat more fruit.

I don't know how much caffeine you're consuming on a daily basis, but if it's in the amounts anywhere near the average American, a little exercise and healthy eating as you recommended would do more to help your complaints than cutting out the tea.

audio redneck
Sorry, but it is an audio related forum after all. What else would I be if not an insulter of other people's taste in music. Your number was bound to come up sooner or later.
