CNET Reviews Rio Nitrus!

"In terms of sound quality, the Nitrus's squeaky-clean 93dB signal-to-noise ratio competes with that of the best-sounding MP3 players. It puts out 8mW of power per channel, which drives the included Sennheisers to deafening levels and provides ample power for higher-end headphones such as our reference set to reach high volumes as well."

8mW?

You also don't want to know what the reference headphones are.

Eliot Van Buskirk is such a chump.

"Newly acquired Rio's 1.5GB Nitrus breaks the latest size barrier by being the first MP3 player to feature an integrated 1-inch hard drive"

RCA beat them to it by a month.

"The bad: No recording function; no FM radio; no remote; no carrying case."

The object was small; not features. It's as a small as a remote allready.

"but jostling the player while it's in the process of reading from the hard drive to the flash-memory buffer can cause your music to skip and may ultimately damage the device"

has anyone heard a drive-based player skip..?

"Nitrus comes with impressive syncing software that makes its 1.5GB capacity actually feel more like 10GB"

WOW, nice trick.

As always, these SNR ratings aren't useful unless we are testing all the players the same way. But no matter, his 'reference' set is a V-600.

Oh, one thing in his defense, I have actually heard a HD player skip (sorta). It's wasn't really skipping as much as it was that the buffer was messed up or something. The first and only HD player I've ever had, and returned less than a month after the purchace did this. It was the NJB 3. I couldn't even move an inch without their being a problem with it. Was really weird. It would stop, then skip back about 2 seconds then continue, and then repeat this until I kept completely still.

It really put me off to HD players..not to mention it re-assuring me that Creative still and will always suck ass.

aww, that does suck. I've never had that problem with mine. But, i've heard of equally serious problems with other well known brands - iRiver, Apple, Phillips. etc. It seems that quality control is a difficult to maintain.

yeah, that really did suck, because the sound quality was absolutely freekin' phenominal. I didn't care for the EAX crap, but really, it was for what it's worth, a great sounding player.
