i've been enjoying my SR-60s for a few months now and am very happy with them, i love the sound signature of them. but i have an itch to try out some closed headphones... right now, i'm looking at a pair of DT-770 pros, or ATH-A700s, anything else i should consider? budget is around $200, but could probably bend a little...

i listen to pretty much everything, but most of the time, hard rock(Alexisonfire, Bullet For My Valentine, Black Light Burns, etc).

my source is a ZVM -> -Qables LOD -> C&C XO

I'm not too sure on other options, I would think there would be a headphone of some sort that does, but if there was one in this price range I think it'd be pretty popular.

Stock, I don't think either of those fit the bill at all. I've listened to A900s and DT-770/250 Pros and I wouldn't say that either was too great for rock. However, and I'd be very interested to hear other's opinions on this, after doing the blu-tak mod they gain an energy. I did it to both, and they both gained quite a bit. For the Beyers, I don't know that I'd necessarily say gained, but it changed the sound fairly significantly. I'd have to go into more depth than I'd really like to at the moment (am intending to make a thread about my experience with modding them), but I will say that music like 80s Metallica and live music (I didn't do a whole lot of testing before I went full on into modding them) gained a lot of energy for lack of a better word. Stock I felt the sound was almost muffled and the bass overbearing, but after the raw sound sound that I know is in the music came through. The reason I'm a little hesitant to say its better is that you'll need to work a bit to find where you like the bass, as its easy to either get more of it and boomy or to tighten it up but lose the slam. With some tuning you should be able to find a nice even spot. There's a simple mod for the headphones that I found helps the soundstage and bass some as well (basically just stuff rolled up cotton underneath the pads to space them a bit further).

Now keep in mind that I have not listened to Grados, so I can't compare it to them. I do have some KSC-75s so I could compare to them if that might help.

At the very least its something worth trying, maybe pick up a used pair and give it a try, if it doesn't work you'll likely be able to get most of your money back and can go from there.

I'm sure there'll be plenty of people who can chime in with better experience.

i don't think you should get the audio technica a900's if you listen to rock. Rock is my only music, and I was not mind-blown by my recent purchase of these. These were also my first pair of non-mass produced low end earphones, and if I were to say that something doesn't really impress, me it's not that great.

those ES7's look promising, my only concern would be how they fit on my ears, I've got a large head(and thus large ears), and in a few pictures I've seen they don't completely cover the ears.. who knows.. maybe I'm just nitpicking

The most important thing is to keep away from the DT770.

I'd personally regard the AT A900 as ideal closed rockers - there's ton's of PRaT and soundscape, and it's hard to make them sound really "wrong". They are not the most detailled fons though, and pricing is also a bit steep IMO.

K271S are a big step up from HFI-700 or ES7. But need amplifier, without one they are totally useless. Ampless I would choose ES7 over A900, as to me they sound more balanced, even that A900 are more detailed and have a bigger headstage, recessed mids kills everything, plus they may sound too bright at times.

went ahead and took the plunge on the ES7s after a little research here, mainly for the price, and they will be the first set of Audio-Technica I've had(same reason i went with the SR-60 when i got them, didn't want to invest too much into a sound signature i might not like)

Well, the DT770 Pros (80 ohm) are not wonderful cans in their original form but not terrible either. You could regard it as an installment purchase towards a pair of Darth Beyers. You'd be half way to a truly excellent pair of rock/metal cans.

Just make sure to unbend too angled headband rods. Search for "Essential ES7 mod".
