Hello, I'm looking for a closed back headphones that is good for rock in general. I mainly listen to J-rock and J-pop, some anime songs and also some JRPG's BGM. They mainly consists of rock elements, so I guess I could look for headphones which are good for rock.

I am currently considering ATH-ES700, as some reviews state that it is impressive for its price, and sometimes it is mentioned when it comes to rock.
I had also considered M50x and MSR7, for M50x I had viewed mixed reviews. And for MSR7, not too sure as well.

Before this, I had considered Shure SRH840, some says that it has narrow soundstage and might not suit my need.
Sennheiser Momentum - Some says it is works best on low to moderate speed tracks, not the best for rock.

So, I hope to get a bit of advice here. My budget is about the price of the 'phones that I mentioned, the over-ear Momentum is the highest that I can afford though.

Thanks! :)

You can try the Marshall Monitors. They are 'tuned' specifically for rock. It also comes with a removable felt inside the cups which increases the treble. They're built like a tank and attractive too although I suggest auditioning them before any purchase.
Cheers

My favorite closed headphones are the Yamaha HPH-MT220, Focal Spirit Professional, and Bose QuietComfort 15. I strongly dislike the M50x due to its boomy, muddy bass that overpowers everything else. The MOMENTUM also has boomy bass, but isn't as bad. They can improve with EQ, though.

I hope the yamahas are pretty dark because jpop can get really really poorly recorded. Like, it amazes me how compressed and bright some of those recordings are.

No, the Yamaha is fairly neutral, but slightly bright, with slightly boosted bass too. J-pop sounded amazing to me on them, and I don't have a problem with the production values of that genre. But it depends on the song, I guess.

Off the top of my head, here are a few J-pop (etc.) artists I like:

EGOIST
Eiko Shimamiya
L'Arc~en~Ciel
Mami Kawada
Nana Mizuki

By the way, the Focal Spirit Professional is darker. (See?)

hehe. By the way, @Feilong4 (the person who just joined the thread) is someone who got an MT220 from my recommendation and loves it.

Besides the coiled cable, it's pretty amazing!

Coiled cables are like the bane of my existence.

Sadly, some of them are hard to be found at my place. I couldn't find Marshall Monitors, Bose QuiteComfort. Yamaha's is out of stock. And there is no Focal Spirit Professional but there is Focal Spirit One. Are they okay?

Some of the artists I listen to are Faylan, Yousei Teikoku, ONE OK ROCK, The GazettE... do HTT from K-ON count? LOL.
There are quite some anime songs that I listened to but hadn't pay attention on its artist though, like Goya no Machiawase, Deadman Wonderland's OP, Shinsekai Yori's ED.

What is your location?

I have never heard the Focal Spirit One. Generally, when headphones are not available to audition, you have to buy them off the Internet.

The Deadman Wonderland OP is actually my favorite hard rock song. It's called "One Reason" by Deadman Wonder Band, featuring Fade. Oddly, I don't like the full-length version much; just the TV size version. I am familiar with the GazettE from some of their songs featured in Black Butler.

For the Focal Spirit One, I watched a review by ZReviews on Youtube and he gave a stunning "DON'T BUY THESE" and an "instead you should look at literally anything else" rating.

I got a few songs from Faylan, Yousei Teikoku, and a lot of ONE OK ROCK songs. Love "Mr. Gendai Speaker" and "Let's Take it Someday". I also like some songs on their new 35xxxv album which I probably will get berated by older hardcore fans.

EDIT: You could ask ZReviews as I think he might have similar tastes in music. Saw him playing some J-Pop/J-OST's in his headphone/speaker demo videos.

I don't know if you can get your hands on the SoundMagic HP150, but he gave it a very positive rating. To be honest if I could, I would have traded my HP200 for the HP150.

EDIT EDIT: I don't know if you've heard some songs by Aimer but they are pretty amazing. Specifically Starringchild and Re:I AM.

Bear in mind that genre is often not the primary factor in determining which headphones will suit you. It typically has more to do with your individual tastes in headphone sonic signature. So sure. Every headphone will have sort of mixed reviews because people's tastes are different. The exception would be that EDM can have some deep sub bass extension that some headphones will not render well. But for the types of rock you have described in your thread, none of these headphones should be a problem in that regard.

The best thing you could do would be to demo some headphones (even ones out of your budget range), and then tell people whether you liked them or not and why. That would give us a frame of reference to figure out what kind of sonic signature you prefer. Do you have an Apple store nearby? They typically have various headphones you can demo hooked up to iPods.
