I need a good pair of headphones for rock music, preferably closed. Unless there's a great pair that's open, then I'll make an exception. I'm willing to spend $100-$150.

Can't go wrong with Grados in the open line. People swear by AKG in the closed world for rock. The K81DJ is in vogue right now. I've been thinking about grabbing one. If you want sealed for on the road. Consider an IEM, lost more portable.

*Edit* I love my HD280s for all kinds of music, but nobody hear agrees with me.

I own them, and I don't agree with you

I'd reach for any other of my headphones (including the portable ones) before I'd reach for the 280Pros. For me, they only work for for (some) electronic music. They are particularly terrible for rock, IMO.

By insisting on closed headphones you are severely restricting the choices - there are only a few decent closed headphones, especially in that price range. You should check out Beyerdynamics DT-770/80, maybe also AKG 81DJ.

As far as open headphones are concerned the obvious choice is Grado (within your price range I'd suggest used SR225) or Alessandro (though I've never heard them so I can't say much about them).

Incidentally, I just got a pair of AKG k501 in the mail today (they were $99 shipped from zzsounds.com) and, based on a brief listening session, I find them quite comparable, if not better than Grado SR225s for most rock music (as long as it doesn't require a lot of low bass). I'm listening to Led Zeppelin right now on k501s and it sounds spectacular (be careful though, because I am sure that this is, to some extent, the excitement of a new purchase that's speaking through me at the moment - they are also quite power hungry also require a beefy amp, while Grados don't).

Anyways, good luck in your search

I don't recommend the DT770s for rock. Mids are too recessed which detracts from the excitement of the guitars. I don't know if any closed can is going to come close to a Grado for rock.

I have the K81DJs and listen to a lot of rock, and I really enjoy them. And, you can't beat them for the price (~$55).

Echo about the K81DJ. However, why do you want closed? Is it because you want to go portable, or because for some odd reason you think closed is supposed to be better than open?
