I love listening to my 650's, but it's rare that the ambient noise level in my NY apartment is low enough not to disturb my music listening, especially in quiet passages.

It seems that Audio Technica have a great rep. for their closed headphones, but I'm looking to have just 1 headphone to live with, so I'd appreciate any suggestions to a closed phone that might be able to replace my 650's completely. I'm not really looking to spend more than $400, but I suppose I might be able to be convinced otherwise...

Beyerdynamic DT 250 80ohm version. Not sure about the 250 ohm version but the sonic balance on the 80 ohm version is very similar to the HD 650 (which I have owned previously).

The closed Audio Technica's sound nothing like the Sennheisers. I don't have much experience with the HD650's, but the HD600's sound quite similar to the K271S'. Read the Toronto meet impressions from a while back. Both I and Yorgi, the owner of the HD600's, came to the same conclusion.

I have found nothing closed like the HD650. I will say as a HD650 fan I also like Etys and ATs on there own terms. What this means I'm not sure, but there's something about the HD650s soft clarity that makes me not like K271 or unevenness of the HD280pro (both mentioned above).

The ER4P/S is every-bit as good at the Senns (I go months preferring one over the other), but there's a good chunk they don't share in common (especially both ends of the spectrum). The step down AT900s (and I really want to hear higher up) are for me near all-purpose cans (exempting portability), but in many ways they're Senn opposites (low impedance, less warm, different midrange, etc.).

If you find the closed HD650 I'd love to find it too so let me know, but my recommendation is to find something equally good, but different.
