Hi ! sorry if i am asking in the wrong section. Please redirect me in a more appropriate one.
I am trying to get a very ggod isolation i can achieve with a headphone.
I am doing some recording tests and i need an excellent isolation from the environmental noises.
I want to assess the quality of mics and preamps using HPs. I have the feeling that i high end set up could be better but i am checking mics mostly and the influence of their placement for the stereo image. I have a plan to make some simple recordings of friends singing.
I really do not know what could be the best way to achieve this because i have experience mainly with open or semi open HPs.
If anyone is aware of a closed HP with an excellent degree of isolation i would appreciate the suggestion.
Or maybe a in-ear solution would be better ?
Thanks a lot,
Regards, gino

Budget?

Hi ! low ... 100-150 USD max. It is not for definitive monitoring just to get a feeling of the overall result. High efficiency HPs could be a good thing as I am going to use portable recorders. My medium long term target is to set up a portable recording rig. Thanks, gino

Those would give you both the 80ohm version is kind of the sweet spot. The attached cable is kind of a bear though. Other option is the RBH H2 clone M&O Electronics bluetooth/wired version or the Urbanfun version listed on alixpress.com. The urbanfuns are probably over budget at 180 I believe but the MOZero can be had for under your budget I got them for $99 on massdrop. I did swap the pads to a HM5 clone for $12 on monoprice so my total is $112 all in.

I use the DT770 250ohm at my office and the isolation is pretty good, they do leak a little since they use velour pads.

Here's a few I can think of that in my opinion isolate very well;
Audio Technica ATH-M50X
Audio Technica MSR7
Sony MDR 7510
Technics RP-DJ1200

My personal favourite of those 4 that I would say isolates the best is the Sony MDR7510.

I would have also recommended Beyerdynamic 770 or T70P or 1770 WITH Beyerdynamic Gel Pads as a pad replacement.

This was my goto for years when I had lots of surrounding noise.

No headphone since (with any pads and I've tried many combos) has come anywhere close in isolation of outside sound or preventing leakage from my headphones.

I'm not sure the Beyer gel pads can be bought anymore as spare parts. You could ask your local Beyer retailer/representative.

Also, this combo is likely over your budget, as the last time I checked the pads alone were c. 60-80€.

One way to gauge the isolation is to look at individual headphones isolation measurements at InnerFidelity.com:

https://www.innerfidelity.com/headphone-measurements

Remember, these are average isolation mounted on a dummy measurement head and with standard pads. Things change according to head shape/size, pad replacement and if you wear glasses or not..

Hi thanks again and yes ... i would keep the budget around 100. I understand i cannot pretend a reference HP for that price.
Yes i see the importance of the pads ... they must provide an excellent sealing effect around the ears. I wonder if this is really the core issue ... the effectiveness of the sealing around the ears. Ok the ear cups can be a little microphonic also and vibrate with the environmental noises.
I will look into it. Thanks a lot, gino

Hi ! thanks a lot ... another good option.
I am still writing down a list at the moment.

+1 for the Beyer 770s, had the 250ohm version for a long time. Isolation was great, and the price is what your budget is.
Wouldnt hurt to audition what SonyFan listed as well if you can

Thanks a lot indeed. As long as the pads are the same i do not think that the impedance will affect isolation properties. Pads are fundamental. The worse could be the velour ones and the best the fake leather ones ?

Thank you very much indeed .... arghh ... expensive but i feel that this is the way to go ... i wonder if some kind of adhesive gel tape to be put on normal pads exists.

very very interesting. I know the site but i did not notice these measurements. Thanks a lot again.
But in the end i guess that a good sealing is indeed the key issue. And i guess the level of sealing that in-ear speakers can provide are unmatched for any around the ear headphones ?
uhm ... i will study the site mentioned.

Thanks to all sincerely.
Kind regards, gino

Definitely!

My benchmark in IEMs is anything that takes Comply P series (the longest foam inserts in the industry). They offer by far the best isolation, better than any tri-flanges, silicone tips or anything else. And the sealing fits all the time, regardless of whether you open your mouth, move your jaw or jog vigorously. No closed around-ear headphone that I have ever tried comes close.

The MOZeros just went down to 89 on massdrop just now. https://www.massdrop.com/buy/m-o-mooh-be00bt-headphones
