I'm in the process of a very slow move--currently staying with my aunt because my apartment is still not ready, 2 months after it was supposed to be.

Well, the effect of this is that I'm living in a different place than most of my stuff. Now, I don't have my guitar amplifier, so there's no point in spending money on new guitar equipment, and I don't have my computer, so there's no point in buying computer upgrades. Well, I just got my paycheck, and with those things and the fact that I'm not paying rent at the moment, it's looking awfully big...

You all know what this means. I had better spend some money on headphones.

I'm looking for a closed headphone that will make me happy, to be used at work and on public transit during my commute. Currently I use a pair of Sennheiser 595s through a Total BitHead. My only small complaint about the 595s is that my favorite guitar music, e.g. Hendrix and Cream, really doesn't move me when I hear it through them. It doesn't quite have the same full force of even just blasting it on my sub-par car stereo. On the other hand, I LOVE how they make drums sound. ("Outside Woman Blues," by Cream, fully reveals Ginger Baker's genius through these phones)

I'm leaning towards the K271 S, as people around here seem pretty fond of it. I know that I'm probably not going to get the same general quality and refinement of my Sennheisers, but will I be disappointed if I break down and just order them? Like, right now? Given my comments above, is there a better choice for me?

I'd prefer not to go more expensive than the K271 S at the moment, but I would certainly consider going up to, say, $350, if I thought it would buy happiness.

I would think UM2s would be an option that alot easiler to use on the go. They are easy to but away and sound is much different then 595s. Hd595s are a great closed headphone. I am just not sure you are really going to move up in the closed headphone area. A900s are very good as well. But not going to give the guitar the live you want to hear. Don't kow much about the "K271 S

Not really interested in IEMs, as my ear canals tend to be a bit picky. And I don't really mind carrying full-sized headphones to and from work--I'm already taking my Total HeadCase back and forth every day.

The Sennheiser 595s are not closed. This is the essential problem.

People around here lean towards Grados for rock but I don't think they offer anything closed... correct me if I'm wrong people.

I think the DT770 do pretty well with rock, not bad for the price and something from the AKG line may fit the bill as well, I've not heard the 271 though

The K271S sound great with rock. My recommendation for a closed circumaural headphone. They like a good amp backing them up and if you find the bass lacking, the Zu Mobius cable makes a nice refinement in that area.

I did some reading on the K271 S and they sound like the best closed headphone for that you need. I would certain getting a better portable amp though.

Yeah, I'm thinking strongly of moving to the Micro stack, but not yet. New apartments need new furniture...

K271S gets my vote. As far as the amp, I have a total bithead too and I think it'll work for you just fine. I don't own the 271s but I have heard it and thought it sounded great.
That's a can you can buy w/ confidence. It's the only closed phone I'd really consider in your price range.

OK, ordered 'em. I've been considering these cans for some time, so we'll see how they work out. If they don't work out, I can always send them back and pick up The Plug.

As "wakeride74" suggested, I would recommend the Beyer dt770's. They are the most "rockin" headphones this side of the grado line-up. They are built study too, which is perfect for going mobile.

Just got 'em (the K271S) in the mail, and all I can say is that I see why they come so highly recommended. Even before burn-in I am really enjoying what I'm hearing through these things. The drums don't sound quite as tight as through my 595s, but they're still very nice.

I am quite satisfied. Maybe I'll think about the Zu Mobius cable in the future, as I keep hearing good things about that, but for now I'm listening to White Room and very happy...

DT770, stellar drum cans. Kick drum impact is massive, snare tone superb. Its like being IN Mike Portnoys isolation booth. recable and the recessed lower mids start to fill in nicely and they become serviceable guitar cans (although not superb).

**edit**

Never mind... didnt realize this was such an old thread.
