I have searched the forum and the net - You can't Rockbox the ipod classic! is this true, and is there an alternative?

Correct. Rockbox is not available for the Nano 2G or 3G, the Classic, or the Touch. These players use completely different hardware from earlier generations of iPods. I'm not aware of any other alternative for the Classic.

That is true!
But hopefully they will get there some day...

Hopefully, but it seems the firmware is very well hidden and the upgrades are encrypted, so it's much harder than previous generations. I don't think any of the developers are working on it. Hopefully I'm wrong. (Thanks, Apple!)
