But brighter than HD650 with more bass than K701? If so, sign me up.

Brighter than HD650? No way in Hell. But they have a hell lot more bass than K701. What you're looking for is definitely the Sony CD3000's. Or possibly Grados.

Some of my observations:

The K701 has a very pronounced midrange compared to the ER-4P, which I've come to like a lot for some music. There is an annoying glare or peakiness in the lower treble of the K701s which I think overshadows the rest of the treble response, making the ER-4Ps sound more extended, detailed, airy in the highs. And I actually find the ER-4P to have a bit more impactful bass probably because the K701 mids overpower its bass.

Hoping for a source/amp upgrade soon.

As for your question... no idea, but I'm interested in hearing about the SA5000.

You're probably right, the ER-4P has more deep bass impact. I think the particular track I was listening to had more low-midrange/ upper bass. The K701 is definitely lacking in deep bass, since the ER-4P is measured ~flat down to <50hz.

I have never heard either one. However, from what I've read, the K701 and HD650 really need a capable amp to shine. What kind of amp did you use?

I have a Benchmark DAC1 and a Yamaha V663BL receiver.

I have heard the K701, the '05 and '03 version of the DT880 and own the iM716 which is said to be 90~95% of the ER4 sound. I also owned the CD3000 for a few months before ZephyrSapphire acquired them from me. To answer your original question, I think the headphone you want to get is the CD3000, followed by the 03/05 DT880. Get the 03 version if you want a flatter response, or get the 05 version if you want a little more bass thump. I hated the k701, it sounded soo lifeless.

I'd say the iM716 and CD3000 really sound quite close and very nice. The CD3000 is definitely better. iM716 does not go as low in the bass dept. and has a bass roll off.

I'd rank them:

CD3000>iM716> 05 DT880> 03 DT880 >> K701.

I've tried the Denon D1000 too, yucks, it was rather dark (in comparison to the headphones ranked above) and the bass was no where as clean and textured as those. The bass on the CD3000 is freaking clean, textured and awesome and also goes very low when properly amped. I sold them because I went onto the Stax camp which brings even MOAR of this goodness... speed, details, clean textured bass and clarity FTW.

^Ngeaha. I love the CD3000's. Best purchase I've ever made. Super comfy and the sound I want (similar or close to the ER4)

Where do you find the CD3000's these days?

I decided to try some D2000's. They sound surprisingly similar to what I remember of the DT880's, albeit with more and clearer bass. Both headphones seem to have a spike somewhere in the 5Khz-10Khz range, which is what caused me to return the DT880's. The ER-4S and ER-4P are actually rolled off in this region to compensate for common CD mastering practices.

I probably won't be selling my HD650's anytime soon...

CD3000's appear every now and then in the "For Sale" section. They're discontinued.
