Chord Hugo

Gee aren't you funny. Yes, a consumable product like a battery is replaceable by me.

I certainly am funny and can be pedantic, because that ensures accuracy of statements, and their meaning.

Your statement was "never ever buy a non North American product again and similarly one that has a half baked design that doesn't allow user replacability" which contains no mention of battery.

I am quite happy for you to only buy US manufactured equipment, but you will probably struggle to find much hifi equipment, in which every component (including the electronics) is user replaceable.
You must be really angry, because this was your first post for 3 years.

You have to concede that his anger is understandable. Issues such as this are the reason I am not that keen to jump onto the Hugo2 bandwagon immediately. It is surely a fantastic product, but being an early adopter seems risky.

There is a cultural issue here. A brit gets 'slightly miffed', but the OP chooses to have a public rant.
Each to their own. I will not inflame the argument any further.
Au revoir.

Sorry Mr Pedantic and Accurate. Since this discussion is related to audio products I would have thought it implicit and would be interpreted as related to audio products and more specifically the battery. I'll be careful to be more  explicit and anal retentive next time not to upset sensibilities. And you are right, I'm effing mad about this issue and this will probably not be my last post on this depending upon how things progress behind the scenes with the manufacturer.

I work as an aerospace engineer, and communicating things clearly and unambiguously, is important.

Part of my role involves engineering communication, and it is a prerequisite to check what I type - it is so simple to assume that the other party will interpret what I type, with the same meaning that I intended.

Sorry that I have offended you so.

I put in a call to my retailer and requested info on the battery replacement, not that mine has any problems. He put in the request to chord and have not heard anything back yet. Course for myself id pay if it was at all reasonable cost and billed by credit card.

Are there instructions online on how to split the Hugo case without destroying it? If so then battery swaps should be diy friendly..

@elviscaprice has the most experience, but I think some unsoldering of battery cables is needed.
Reasonably DIY friendly, if you are confident with a soldering iron, but many owners are not.

Chord do supply batteries for $38 I think, but if you do not go the DIY route, then there are the costs for shipping the Hugo to the dealer, and the dealer to pay a technical specialist to perform the physical replacement. Those costs do vary, but can add up to 2 or 3 hundred dollars.

I think Chord have learnt from the experience with the Hugo, and certainly the Mojo and Hugo 2, have batteries that are connected by simple cables and plugs - thus making DIY battery replacement quite straightforward.

I don't recall reading about any instructions for dismantling the case, and have never tried it myself.

Split the case?  Just remove the small screws with an Allen wrench.  And pull the back cover off.  You can remove the batteries from here.  They are hard wired in.  But you could cut the wires close to the battery and solder on a new battery with leads to the existing leads.
That's if the problem that caused the batteries/battery to fully drain was because of life expectancy.  Could be the charger protection circuits Chord built in.  If it is, no battery replacement is going to solve your problem.

Mobility was never one of my needs.  So I've moved on to the 2Qute where I can upgrade the power supply to something better than Lipo batteries, in my opinion.

Yes, Rob made the Hugo 2 much easier for replacing batteries.  In fact, the Hugo 2 can run without batteries if using 5V 2A power input, but not suggested by Rob for best SQ.  How is the charger protection on the Hugo 2, more robust?  I would hope so.

I bet Rob is quaking in his boots and fearing for his job with your expertise in power supplies.
:)

But you are right about the battery replacement in Hugo1 being something any local techie can do.

By the way, someone related this to replacing batteries in cars. Well some modern car batteries can only be replaced by dealers because they need diagnostic kit to reset the battery memory. Its the way the world is going with less and less user serviceable kit.

Looks like you're using two LPS-1's, you find a significant difference?

So far my experience has been very positive in any usage with the LPS-1.  Just picked up the 2Qute and look forward to hearing in the next week with the LPS-1's.  I'll report back on the 2Qute thread my findings.

I'm not offended and thank you for clarifying what sort of head space you come from. Makes it easier to excuse comments that on the surface look like they are meant to prove how clever one is rather than add something to a discussion. My intention in posting was to add a data point of individuals who (in my opinion) have had their batteries fail prematurely in their Hugos. If I don't get treated well by the manufacturer, I will make it my personal mission to share my dissatisfaction with this product to as many as I can.
