Chord Hugo

I'm an old analog with a high tolerance, LOL.

Sure, some of the best music I have heard was LP's but no longer have a home rig like that. Everything mobile for my life style.

I am getting ready to pull the trigger, just want to make sure as I can that I will enjoy this for the money I have paid.

FYI - the exact model shipped with Hugo should be TD-12006B from PowerPAX

To match the exact 2.1 x 5.5 x 12mm DC barrel with 12V/0.6A output, there was something on eBay

This one will fry Hugo when we use it outside US since it's 120V ONLY, similar one with 2.1 x 5.5 x 12mm and 12V/0.6A output

Other than that, we could always grab an adapter like this

I've been preparing my home for the Hugo.

I runned off to buy myself an Apple Airport Express (has an 16/44.1 optical output) and a QED Performance Optical Toslink to Mini Toslink Graphite to connect the Airport Express to Hugo.

The idea is to stream Wimp HiFi (16/44.1 internet streaming service with around 23,000,000 songs) wirelessly from the iPad / iPhone / iPod Touch to the Airport Express and then bit perfect to the Hugo, and to be able to do that and at the same time be able to charge both the Hugo and the iDevice and at the same time.

I have set up the AURALiC Taurus with a DAC Magic 100 (the only DAC with optical in that I got here) by my bed to try the concept out..

I have almost forgotten about how a really good headphone amp can sound like.. :)

I like my JDS Labs and the VentureCraft LE 12V DD Socket 1 (now with MUSES02) but.. it is nothing like this setup, even if it is just a DacMagic 100 ..

Only problem now is the dropouts that come and go using Airplay to the Airport Express.. totally ruin the experience that it could have been, because it sounds quite good when it works..

I am using some of the best networking equipment (Asus RT-66U) and have 120 Mbps download speed and 10 Mbps up (internet speed meashured on the iPad) so the streaming is not a problem at all. The Airport Express is hard wired to the network at 100Mbps (1000Mbps in the rest of the network, as the AE is the limitation). I turned off the wireless functionality on the unit and it got better, but not good enough.. it's a shame that this s*** does'nt work!! I am suspecting the iOS7 but I don't know.. Airplay has the limitation of 16/44.1 so I am using it to the max.. but it should work anyway..

I have to figure this out before my Hugo arrives..

I finally summoned up the courage to file down the connector on the Cinnamon USB cable and it worked out okay.  The connector is solid plastic so there were no complications and there's still a seal around the plug.  I won't win any Master Craftsman awards though... :)

First impressions are that its more dynamic than the generic cable, but as it was a special order that arrived suspiciously quickly it may have been used before and have more hours on the clock.  I'm not complaining if it was, as it saves me having to listen to it whilst it goes through its crap phase, but I'll leave music playing through both cables whilst the Hugo runs in and compare them again later.

I would really like more sound impressions. Yes, I am living through your ears for now. :^)

Any sound impressions might prove to be premature this early on, but I'm thoroughly enjoying listening to it.  It's well balanced, even across the frequency range and not doing anything objectionable, which isn't bad for something burning in.  It's still a little constrained, lacks airiness and has limited micro-detail, but I've had to replace all my usual cables at the same time so I can't separate the Hugo from those.  Since getting the HD800s I've become phenomenally fussy about what they're plugged in to because they'll flag up anything that's wrong, but so far, ergonomics aside, I'm very happy with it.

Are you using it amped or have you tried it amped?

If you mean using a separate headphone amp then no. I'm trying to get away from my mains supply and go completely off the grid, so a headphone amp would just complicate things. I have a Mjolnir, which is now gathering dust, and whilst it was very good I don't miss it. At no point since using the Hugo have I felt it needed amping.

I was wondering how the dac translates to transparency and so on with a known external amp, even a good portable one.

I think it's too early for A/B tests unless someone has had a pre-release Hugo for a little while now.  If it helps I have a NAD M51 and was trialling a Mytek DSD DAC a couple of weeks ago, both of which were excellent feeding the Mjolnir, but the Hugo's doing enough at this stage of burn-in that I'd expect it to compete with them.
