I'm looking to upgrade my audiolab m-dac with either a chord hugo tt or a phonitor 2 and seperate dac something like a RME ADI2 .
Has anybody compared the above items? I'm using Audeze lcd-3 fazor. Many thanks in advance.

look at it this way...

Do you want 1 unit that has both amp+dac that you cannot change or upgrade unless you upgrade the entire unit. OR! would you rather have a separate unit for an AMP and a separate unit for a DAC. so that if you want to upgrade in either aspect you can without having to change the other.

admittedly the benefits to the hugo is that it takes up less space, since its 1 unit. and having 2 units obviously takes up more room. but at every high end audio meet/show/collection i've ever been too. people always go with a separate amp and a separate dac so they can switch things around.

i'm personally very comfortable with my single amp+dac unit from RME. its more than i need and if i ever get gear that requires more than what i have, i'll use my RME as a DAC(it was designed for that purpose primarily) and buy a more powerful amp that also has balanced.

The TT is basically a Hugo 2 with a better power supply and XLR out for something like 40% more money (new or used). If you like the TT, the Hugo 2 gets you almost all of the way there.

The ADI2 is a pretty good DAC and overall with the LCD3 I think having the phonitor over using the TT straight from its own jack helps. Also you may want to consider something like the Crane Song Solaris (which has an okay built-in amp).

Thank you for the advice. Having a seperate amp and dac with a view to future upgrading sounds like the way to go. There a few good deals for a new
phonitor 2 at the moment and it looks great too, paired with the RME it comes In at little more than a used Hugo tt.

Sounds good to me, and thats the thing later on with more money or diffirent equipment, youll have a seperate dac and amp so you can change as you will. Trust me, this is the best path to follow :)
