Hey guys, I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to high end headphones. I had a pair of X2 Fidelios that unfortunately broke. I'm looking to replace them with a better pair. My setup is just a FiiO E10k USB DAC plugged into my computer. Will be using them for many hours every day.

I was originally going to go with the ZMF Classics because I had been recommended them by someone whose opinion I trust, but then I was told about the HE560s that are selling way below their original 900$ mark.

My question is can I get a good enough sound from the HE560s through that amp? I would need a 6.35 female to 3.5 male connector as well, would that hinder sound quality? I'm looking for a decent amount of bass and soundstage isn't *too* important. I've also heard someone say that the drivers for the HE560s get burnt out easily, which is worrying since I would be holding onto these as a main pair for a long while.

Should I just stick with the ZMFs or should I pounce on the lowered price of the HE560s? Are there any other headphones I should take into consideration? Budget around 300-350$

FWIW, you may find the E10K a bit anemic for powering the ZMF classics as well.

As far as adapters go, it shouldn't be an issue for sound quality provided (a) it's wired correctly and (b) it doesn't break. With cheap adapters, neither of those things is at all guaranteed. (You don't need to spend a ton on expensive adapters, just don't totally cheap out or if you do, be prepared to maybe have to buy a few rather than just one.)

If you're considering the ZMF Classics, you've probably also considered the Modhouse Argon?

What's the absolute cheapest amp you could recommend for them? I've considered picking up a new one down the line anyway. It would need to be USB, too.

I actually haven't thought about the Argons; Mk3 right? Would you recommend those over the ZMFs?

I have the Argons but not the ZMF classics. Based on reviews they’re very similar, with the Argons having a bit more bass. One practical difference is that is you choose the balanced wiring option, the Argons use a single entry TRRS jack while the ZMF use dual entry jacks. I don’t think you can go wrong with either headphone.

In terms of cheapest amp I can personally recommend: Walnut F1 is like $30 and a tiny powerhouse, but the build quality is commensurate with the price. But most desktop amps should have no problem, like the $99 Schiit Magni or Monoprice Liquid Spark, or more powerful portable amps like the Fiio A5. And what is widely considered the ultimate amp for Foster RP driver headphones, the Emotiva Bas-x A100, is also pretty cheap.

Thank you for the info you've been very helpful. One last question: how much better will the HE560s sound than the Argons or the Classics and would I need an even better amp?

Haven’t heard the 560s. Based on specs, they do require even more power than the RP driver headphones, but you won’t have to jump to a different price bracket to power them. And if you’re worried about power, just go for the Bas-X which will for sure have more power than you will ever need.

Thanks for the info, I think I'll be picking up the Argons based on all you've told me. Thanks again for your help!

I would highly consider the Liquid spark amp and ZMF Classics. I'm actually listening to this right now breaking in my Spark. It's a match made in heaven. ZMF is a fantastic company and his customer service is excellent! The Spark is a truly remarkable amp and pairs very well with the classic. I can't imagine the Spark sounding bad with any headphone. Power for days, micro detail, cohesive soundstage and a nice full sound. What's not to like. You can see my short review/ impression of this amp in on the sparks page.
