I've had good luck going to travel agencies that deal directly with students. The seats are usually right next to the wings, but it's cheaper usually.

If he's buying a ticket in the States, try this:

1. Source the cheapest fare, given time and preferred airline.

2. Then, go directly to the chosen airline's corporate website and see whether it's dedicated booking engine will offer a cheaper rate -- for it will sometimes.

Special deals offered to students very often are entangled in so many restrictions that their usefulness is diminished. Your mileage may vary.
