I cut a hole in the comfies that came with my Alessandro MS-1s after lots of convincing here, despite my skepticism. There was little difference that I can note because I don't remember what they sounded like without the hole in them.

Now after a few weeks, perhaps they've flattened more since they're not even two months old, and the drivers touch my ears. It is horribly irritating and I can't stand it now.

Where can I get black(none of that yellow senn stuff, I am NOT big bird) comfie pads for cheap? I saw the todd flats for $30 and had a hysterical laughing fit.. $30 for plain cloth pads. Amazing how some places try to rip you off.

I want black because I don't want to have to dye them. I could put up with other colors also, but no yellow/pink/other ridiculous colors please. The key word is cheap. Not because I'm poor, but because I'd feel horribly ripped off if I spent a considerable amount of money on such a small piece of cloth that's probably sold @ $5 for a box of them..

Thanks.

The Radio Shack comfies are probably cheapest. I run my sr 60,s with two pair of the RS comfies for extra padding and to tame the highs that im sensitive to. When i cut holes in my original comfies i just couldnt take the highs.

Those don't look very comfy (: Beyer or Sennhieser velour, not that's comfort for your ears

Grados are great sounding phones, no doubt. Replacement pads for $2.99 is pretty convenient too. Gotta love radio shack.

and $30 for flats isn't a rip off. i'd buy flats over any actual headphones for $30 (well, cept for the KSC-35) because of how it just jacks up the Grado sound just the way I like it.

I'm not arguing that it can very much improve the sound, I'm arguing that mass produced cloth is worth about 1/10th of that..

I got the radioshack pads for a shocking $3.24, give or take a few cents.I can't tell the difference between them and the comfies w/ holes, but I also didn't try comparing directly. Nothing too noticeable. My guess is that either a) the comfies are much thicker, thus the hole makes a difference b) the hole does nothing, and it was placeabo that got people to think it does c) I need to do a direct comparison in order to hear it.

Either way, they're smaller which gives them a nicer fit. And I'm not sure if it's because it's a nicer material or because they don't have a hole, but I can wear them tight enough so that they'll stay on without the headband touching my head and they won't irritate my ears. I recommend for every Grado lover who, on occasionm can be dissatisfied with the comfort of their flats/bowls.

It's foam, not cloth, and because of the way they're made and the realtively small production runs they DO cost $30 per pair (retail, I'm sure Todd is making a few bucks with each sale). Plus, it's not like they're produced in quantities of tens of thousands each month, which is about what it would take to drive the price below $10/unit. (Grado Labs discontinued production of flat pads about 12 years ago, despite most of their headphones sounding better in many people's opinions with them, and if he were to restart production today John Grado would have to sell something like 10,000 headphones with them before the flat pads would become profitable again).

Oy. These Radioshack pads itch like crazy. I think I'm going to order another pair of comfies and be done with it. I've learned my lesson never try one of these crazy mods again.

edit: Switching back I can confirm that a) the grado comfies are far more comfortable, it's a joy having them on in comparison, unless I wear them too tight(when I don't want to have the headband on my head). And there's no noticeable sound difference to me.
