Hi All:

I have been following the Philips 963 thread for some time. Here is my question...I have a good redbook CDP player (which I can upgrade to upsample). So I really don't need that feature, I see the philips DVD763SA (DVD/SACD) for 199 new or 144 used. I'm sure it can't be any worse then my year old cheap DVD player for video, but anyone have any idea how this would by for SACD? Are cheap SACD players not worth it? I though this might be a good way to ease into the new format.

You have to be careful in this area. I got swept up in the sony ns500v frenzy and ended up with a player that is great for sacd but absolutely sucks for redbook play. It is ok for a dvd player but nothing special. It was only around 130.00-140.00 so I won't cry too much, but just a word of caution anyhow....

sounds like the ns500v is exactly what you need. the redbook isn't very good but the sacd playback is damn good. the dvd playback is fairly good as well, although it isn't progressive scan (you really shouldn't notice unless you have a big-ass nice tv). it's also *very* compatible with cd media including svcd, vcd, dvd-r, dvd-rw.. etc.

Any idea where to get a Sony unit? Don't seem to be made anymore and did not come up with any for sale with web searching...that's kind of why I started looking at the Philips unit.

you might also look at the sony DVP-NS755V dvd/sacd player. retails for 250 but you can find it for 200-220 if you look around.

Anyone notice a hiss coming out from their ns-500v rca jacks? I do and it bugs me.

kpfeifle, sounds like it is the player for you then, have you done a search on yahoo or something like that? as of a few months ago you could still get them. I 'll check myself and let you know if I find one.
