I'm buying some open portables (prolly PX100's) soon because I can't have isolation at work, but while I'm at it I thought I'd try an entry-level canalphone or IEM for home use too, just for comparison if nothing else. EP630 or CX300 are the likely choices. The JBL 220 is also in this bracket, but unless it comes up for sale at a discount, its a few bucks out of range. This will be "part 2" of my birthday present and the cap is about $100. (part 1 was the Zune I got on sale from compusa)

So, is the ep630/cx300 a sleep/lay down friendly form factor? Or is there something else at this price point that would do the job better? What about the ER6i? Can this one be laid on? I think the E2C and Super.fi 3 are ineligible due to bulk, but I'm open to suggestions/advice.

I just bought the ER6 for in bed use. They work great for this purpose, no discomfort while turning around in bed. They also sound very good to me, for this I use them straight from a 5.5 G iPod/no EQ.

I have the ep630 and used to have the er6i both of them are comfortable for laying down, the ep630 comes out really easily and doesn't isolate since its not an IEM but it is very comfortable, more comfortable than the er6i. The er6is once sealed in the ear stay in really well and isolate really well, and they are still comfortable but it's easier to tell that they are there, the ep630 being canalphones don't go in very much so doesn't feel like they are there.

if you like bass, i'd say go for the ep630. they're very cheap too, around $30.. it sounds good too imho.. if clarity is what you prefer, then i'd say go for the er-6i, although it will set you back around 70ish i think.. but since you're just using it for sleeping, then get the ep630 so if you break them you don't feel super bad. congratulations on the zune

hey thanks for the replies guys. I thought this thread had slipped into oblivion. good advice too ... hadn't thought about damaging them while asleep but its a very real possibility. Too bad there isn't some way to make them put themselves away as soon as you doze off.

I slept with the EP630s in my ears for a few nights, and didn't feel much discomfort (if any at all). The only thing that kept me worrying was that the cords would strangle me.

One point to note though, would be that there is quite a bit of microphonics due to the rubbery wires.

PS: This is coming from someone who couldn't sleep with the UM1 because it was too big.

I could do the um1, but that's all I'd be getting. Same goes for d-Jays which I've also been considering. But I need something non-isolating at work, so I'd be stuck for a while using the stock buds ... which wouldn't be all that bad because I'm usually only listening with the volume at 2 or 3. Once I was home I could use the um1's, but if I was going that way with it, I might as well get MS1's or the HD555. (at $115 shipped the 555's are still doable with a little butt kissin')
