I'm considering (only considering) going for the newegg deal on the HD580s, but am hesitant due to the lack of a decent amp for them in my house. So, what would be something cheap, portable optional, preferably not the size of my house, amp option? I've read opinions that a JMT or tangent or someone-else built Meta42 would be good, but has that opinion changed at this point? I read that BEFORE the Fixup Mini v3 came into play, and maybe some other changes in the Meta42 area. Would the Total Airhead be good for it's cost compared to a Meta42 I could get?

Thanks in advance. BTW, my wallet likes me because it's not good with long term relationships

The Creek OBH-11 costs around $170 retail, however you will need a power source and while the unregulated OBH-1 power supply is under $20, the list price of the regulated OBH-2 is $100, so with shipping, a combination of these two components will be close to $300.

A better deal might be the combination of the class A Creek model OBH-11SE and the OBH-2 power supply is available for just under $300, plus shipping, from

I usually recommend that to get the most for your money to consider a variety of vintage gear, however as you object to the size of your amp being too large, I will suggest you look for a Marantz 1040 or 1070 integrated amplifier. The footprint of these amplifiers are quite a bit smaller than either the other Marantz amplifiers or their receivers of the same period. Either will cost much less than any new amplifier option, maybe $50 for the model 1040 and around $100 for the 1070.

So the fixup mini v3 isn't up to it in your opinions? I'm just wondering because the guy who makes them on his web page says that it "should sound as good as a full meta42 if not better." Also, the Total Airhead kinda gets stomped by what JMT or Tangent can make?
So, is there a website to get kind of a full listing of what it'd cost me to have it configured in a certain way (kind of a price listing of each part or of each configuration or modifications they'd be willing to make and what it'd cost)? I'm not going to be buying this amp right now, so I really don't want to bother JMT or Tangent with a PM that isn't going to be worth their time because I'm sure they're busy enough. Also, thanks for the help.
