I went to see Charlie Hunter last night. He played at the North Star Bar in Philadelphia. What a killer show. This is the 2nd time I've seen him and this show was a little better than the first. He played more solos and this show featured a trio (drums/sax/charlie on bass and guitar) and they were a little more experimental. The amazing thing about him is he plays an 8 string guitar which allows him to play bass and guitar simultaneously. You really have to see it to believe it. For anyone in the Philly area or close to it, he is playing at the North Star the next three Tuesdays and tix are $10. Can't beat that!

If you want to check out his music all his CD's are great, but I like Right Now Move or his self titled release best.

Charlie is very good, and I like the sound of his recordings. He is on the Blue Note label, and sits in with quite a few people. I would put him in the "jamband" genre, but he is a bit more rhythm oriented with jazz roots.

I had the pleasure of seeing Charlie Hunter last night, and let me say I was very impressed! I had only heard of him by name, but knew nothing about his music or how he actually went about playing music! What a unique performer! What a unique instrument! I would love to get a glimpse of his brain in a functional MRI while he was performing

Anyway, despite not having a great fondness for the saxophone, I really enjoyed the songs he performed. It was a very relaxed atmosphere, and like Andrew suggested, his approach is one of 'jamband'. I was very happy to hear and see my first bass clarinet which the sax player flopped out, but sadly, it was only for a few tunes. Some of Charlie Hunter's guitar effects were a little questionable in my mind, but on the whole, I liked the gig so much that I bought a CD!

Thanks again waylman!
