I didn't really know where to post this, but ill give it a go here.

I have a mains adapter with a USB socket in it for charging a BT headset thing for my phone, and i was wondering if i could use it to charge my iPod Classic 160Gb.

It says the Output is 5.0v at 180mA ... i searched around the net a bit but couldn't find any reassuring evidence for the safe charging voltage of the Classic. Can anyone help?

Cheers.

Doesn't the iPod classic still use the dock connector, the proprietary Apple one?

Yes, what im wondering is can i plug the dock usb cable that came with my Classic in to this main plug thing safely.

Best bet is to try it; the voltage is within normal USB voltages and it won't fry your iPod. It may or may not work, though... This is from experience with my sister's iTouch not charging with the old firewire charger and a cheap USB charger. Works fine with the iHome and the official charger, though.

Hi JDN,

180mA is probably too low for charing the iPod. I remember measuring the current draw during charging at it was at least double that (actually, I think it was around 500mA). The apple charger I have is 1A (1000mA).

Your 180mA might overheat or its voltage will fall below 5V if it can't handle the current draw when charging... be careful!

I use USB charger for walkman mp3player to charge my iPod Classic.
When charging, there is no sign on iPod indicating charging process, but actually it's being charged. I usually leave it overnight (around 7 hours). The battery status is not updated until I reset the iPod.

I only use this method when traveling (not bring laptop).
The charger mentioned that the output is DC 5V 800mA, so is it safe?

Just wondering, when using official apple charger, will there be charging status so that we know when it's already fully charged?

Thanks..

Yes, I use an Apple charger that I got included with one of my earlier ipods and it works fine plus the ipod indicates "Charging" and "Charged"
